The catalog's 300 to 600 rule, and the figures that break it
The MSN page of Kent State's 2026-2027 catalog draws one graduation line for every concentration: a minimum running from 300 to 600 clinical hours, set by concentration. Most concentrations land inside that band. Some published figures do not, and a few programs carry two numbers on two Kent State pages.
- FNP: the five practicum descriptions add up to 675, above the top of the band. The FNP hours page goes course by course.
- AGCNS: the catalog allows 450 to 600; the certificate web page states a flat 525.
- Nurse Educator: the program page says 300 hours, and the educator rotation description says 180.
- DNP: a 500-hour minimum, 550 across the project courses, and 525 in the legacy

None of these is ours to settle, and none is safe to ignore. Your syllabus sets each course's target, and your practicum faculty and concentration coordinator can confirm the total for your admission year.
The expensive mistake is planning to the lowest number you have seen. Confirm the figure before quoting an hour count to any preceptor.
What makes a practicum hour count at Kent State
A logged hour is not automatically a counted hour. The MSN Student Handbook attaches conditions to every practicum hour:
- The facility has a College of Nursing affiliation agreement in force; the college, never the student, arranges it. See affiliation agreements.
- Your practicum faculty and concentration coordinator have approved the preceptor and the site.
- Every compliance item is current. A lapsed yearly item, such as the TB test or flu vaccine, stops your hours until it is renewed.
- The hours fall between the first and last day of the semester, unless your coordinator approved an earlier start. The semester rules page has the 2026-2027 dates.
- Each practicum day is logged in Typhon inside its 15-day window.
Two programs count time students sometimes overlook: PMHNP faculty supervision counts toward each practicum, and DNP hours include time spent on the project itself.
Turning a program total into a term-by-term plan
Day to day, the load of each term matters more than the program total. The catalog prints no term-by-term MSN roadmap; instead, a standard plan is loaded into your Graduate Planning System (GPS) record once you are admitted, and most part-time students take one practicum per term.
The AGACNP certificate roadmap shows a steady sequence in full: a fall of foundation courses with no practicum, then NURS 61092 in spring, NURS 61392 in summer, NURS 62392 the next fall and NURS 63392 the next spring. That is 600 hours over four consecutive terms, summer included, each needing a hospital preceptor with room for you.
Count backward from the first practicum. The mandatory orientation runs 4 to 6 months before it, and your concentration coordinator helps with that first placement during the semester before, so the search begins about two terms out. The orientation page turns that into a month-by-month plan.

How many clinical hours is the Kent State MSN?
It depends on the concentration; the catalog's graduation rule gives a range of 300 to 600. By published figures and course sums, NAHSL and Nurse Educator run 300, the AGPCNP 525, the AGACNP, PMHNP and WHNP 600, the AGCNS 450 to 600 and the FNP 675. Your syllabus and coordinator confirm your figure.
Do Kent State post-master's certificates need fewer clinical hours than the MSN?
Usually not. Each certificate takes the same practicums as its parallel MSN concentration, so the hours match. The FNP certificate is the exception to read closely: it lists the pediatrics practicum at 1 to 2 credits, so its practicums total 600 or 675. Your admission gap analysis shows which courses your plan includes.
Are there practicum hours in Kent State's online RN-to-BSN?
Kent State publishes no hour total for the online RN-to-BSN. The practice-based pieces are NURS 43001 Health Promotion, which includes a clinical laboratory component, and the NURS 47099 capstone, a scholarly project course. Background checks and immunization forms come into play only when a site asks for them.
How many clinical hours are in Kent State's BSN?
Kent State states no program-wide total for the pre-licensure BSN. Its clinical courses list weekly contact hours, and the NURS 40045 senior capstone is a precepted immersion that the preceptor page puts at 144 hours with an RN preceptor, though another guidebook page says 120. The college arranges BSN clinicals.
Will Kent State tell me if my program's hours change?
The MSN Student Handbook says the College of Nursing emails affected students about curricular changes, including new practicum-hour requirements or added courses. Read your Kent State email regularly, keep your GPS plan current, and check each practicum syllabus when the course opens, since it carries that course's hour target.
