All three end in the same place, approval by your practicum faculty and coordinator. The right choice depends on your time, your concentration and where you live, and the routes combine well.

The same finish line for every route
Whichever route you take, Kent State's rules stay the same. Each preceptor and site still goes to your practicum faculty and concentration coordinator for approval. Hours are credited only where the College of Nursing has a current affiliation agreement, and the college arranges it. Hours begin on the semester's first day, unless your coordinator approves an earlier start, and finish by its last. The preceptor requirements for your concentration apply in full, whoever finds the preceptor.
So the real question is not who makes the first call. It is how much of your own time the search takes, how early it starts, and how complete the file is when it reaches your faculty. Those three points run through each route below, and the placement process page shows where each step sits in Kent State's sequence.
Route one: searching on your own
This is the route Kent State's handbook describes: you identify qualified preceptors in appropriate agencies and confirm them with practicum faculty. In practice that means checking each prospect against Kent State's baseline and your concentration's rules, asking about employer approval, finding out whether the site has an agreement, and checking the GSN Canvas course for agencies that bar direct contact.
It works best when you already know people. An NP colleague at a practice outside your unit, a former manager now leading elsewhere, or a physician who has precepted before can become a quick yes. It asks the most of your evenings and weekends, which matters when you work while carrying 4 to 6 credits a term, as Kent State says most MSN students do. Route two: leaning on your concentration coordinator
Kent State builds real support into the first placement. Your concentration coordinator helps you find a site and preceptor during the semester before your first practicum course, and after that course faculty, coordinators and, for doctoral students, the DNP program director step in as needed. Coordinators and program directors also work with program faculty to pair preceptors and experiences with each course, the handbook adds.
Your coordinator knows the concentration's requirements best and sits in the approval seat, so talk with them early on any route. The college's network is large: Kent State counts upward of 750 clinical partners, largely across Northeast Ohio. Coordinator help is strongest for a first practicum; for later courses the handbook frames it as help when needed, and the search stays primarily yours. Route three: a placement service built for Kent State
A placement service does the search work with you, and ours is designed around Kent State's process. We find preceptors in your community who fit the specific NURS course, confirm they can take you in your term, prepare the credentials and site details your faculty review, tell you early if a new College of Nursing agreement is needed, and line up a replacement if a preceptor drops.
It fits best when time is short, when your course needs a narrow specialty such as a PMHNP prescriber or an AGACNP specialty rotation, when you live outside Northeast Ohio or in another approved state, or when several practicums still lie ahead. The FNP alone runs five practicum courses, each needing a confirmed preceptor before its term opens.

Combining the routes
The routes work together. You can take your coordinator's first-practicum help, follow a lead from your own network, and bring us in for the courses that are hardest to fill. Tell your coordinator what you are pursuing, and tell us which courses are already covered, so no practice hears the same request twice. A shared list of who has been approached keeps everyone's effort pointed at new doors.
One workable split: your own contact for a primary care course near home, and our search for a specialty block, a pediatric preceptor for NURS 61692 or the final practicum across the lifespan. If a workplace lead is part of your plan, check Kent State's workplace site rules first, since PMHNP students cannot train where they work.
A quick way to decide
Bring us in if any of these is true
- Your practicum starts within one semester and no preceptor has agreed yet
- Your course needs a narrow specialty: a PMHNP prescriber, a pediatric preceptor, a CNS working in all three spheres, or an acute care specialty rotation
- You live outside Northeast Ohio, or in another state on Kent State's approved list
- You work full time and have several practicums still ahead
- A preceptor has already declined or dropped out
If none of these applies and you have a strong personal lead, start on your own and keep your coordinator informed. If one or more does, the earlier we start, the more options your placement advisor can put in front of you. Either way, the form below gets you a plan.

Does Kent State place graduate nursing students with preceptors?
Kent State helps rather than placing you outright. The handbook puts identifying a qualified preceptor on the student, with the coordinator helping before the first practicum. Should I tell my coordinator I am using a placement service?
Being open helps. Kent State's approval covers the preceptor and the site: whether they are qualified, appropriate for the course and at an agency with an agreement. Share how you found each lead and bring a complete file. Your coordinator can then focus on the fit, which is where their judgment matters most.
Is it too late to search on my own for Spring 2027?
Not as of late September 2026, but the margin is shrinking. Spring classes start Jan 19, 2027, and a new affiliation agreement has no published lead time.
