Timed to the orientation and the semester before
Kent State gives you two early signals. Your concentration coordinator sends notice of a mandatory orientation that falls four to six months ahead of the first practicum course, and the coordinator's placement help runs through the semester just ahead of that course. What reaches your practicum faculty and coordinator
Kent State publishes no graduate preceptor agreement form, so approval rests on the details you bring. We put them in one place:
- The preceptor's role (physician, APRN, PA, healthcare administrator or Certified Nurse Educator), matched to your concentration
- An active, unrestricted license and certification in the area of practice
- A minimum of one year in clinical practice, plus, for APRN rotations, twelve months in the same population focus and role
- Sign-off from the preceptor's employer and practice site
- An updated CV, which Kent State asks preceptors to send to your graduate faculty member
- The site's name, setting and address, with the agency's onboarding steps
- Where the site stands on a College of Nursing affiliation agreement

After your first practicum
Kent State's help changes shape once your first placement is behind you. The semester-before help from your coordinator is written for the first practicum; after that, the handbook names course faculty, coordinators and, for doctoral students, the DNP program director as help when needed.
Most programs need several placements, often with different preceptors. The FNP runs five practicum courses, from NURS 61292 through NURS 63292, including pediatrics. PMHNP students move from a psychotherapy-experienced provider to a prescriber. DNP students carry project hours across NURS 72692, NURS 72792 and NURS 72892. We begin the next search while you are still in the current course, so each new term opens with a preceptor already confirmed. How early should I contact you before a Kent State practicum?
As soon as you know the term of your next practicum, and ideally before your orientation notice arrives. Two terms ahead leaves room for employer approval, a possible new affiliation agreement and agency onboarding. Do I still confirm my preceptor with practicum faculty?
Yes. Kent State's handbook asks you to confirm each preceptor with practicum faculty, and final approval belongs to faculty and your concentration coordinator. We prepare the file you bring to them and answer follow-up questions about the preceptor or site, which keeps the review moving.
Can you find me a preceptor outside Ohio?
Yes, in your home state, provided you hold a valid RN license there and your online program accepts that state. Kent State's approved-states page covers AGCNS, PMHNP, WHNP, Nurse Educator, NAHSL, the post-MSN DNP and RN-to-BSN. The hybrid FNP, AGPCNP and AGACNP are absent from it, so confirm your status with the Office of Academic Advising and Student Services.

Who arranges the affiliation agreement, Kent State or me?
The College of Nursing arranges it with the facility; students do not negotiate or sign one. No lead time for a new agreement appears in Kent State's published material, which is why we check a site's status as soon as its preceptor agrees.
