Kent State WHNP practicums: gynecology, primary care, pregnancy and a specialty
Kent State's Women's Health NP concentration has four practicums, NURS 66192 through NURS 66492, each worth 2 credits and tied to its own lecture. Most run with a CNM, WHNP, FNP or general OB/GYN whose practice sees plenty of gynecologic or obstetric patients, and the women's primary care course widens the list to family and adult providers.

The WHNP practicum sequence
All four WHNP practicums are 2-credit courses meeting for 10 contact hours each week. The catalog states 150 hours for NURS 66192, NURS 66392 and NURS 66492 and leaves the hours for NURS 66292 blank. Kent State's WHNP certificate page puts the total at 600 clinical practicum hours in your home state, which works out to 150 per course.
Order matters in this concentration. NURS 66100, the lecture paired with the first practicum, needs NURS 60015 and NURS 60045 first, and NURS 66400 needs NURS 66300, so WHNP III always comes before WHNP IV.

NURS 66192 WHNP I: gynecologic care
The first practicum is gynecologic care, taken with NURS 66100. A CNM, WHNP, FNP or general OB/GYN can precept, and the rotation page asks for a setting with good GYN or OB volume. For this course, ask a prospective practice what share of its visits are gynecologic before you commit.
As your first practicum, it follows Kent State's first-course rules: the concentration coordinator helps with the search in the semester before, a required orientation lands sometime between four and six months ahead, and you must meet the Clinical Compliance Policy in full before you register.
The certificate roadmap in the catalog prints spring before fall in each year, which does not match the prerequisites. Read against them, WHNP I comes after a fall term of the 3P courses (NURS 60015, NURS 60045, NURS 60441). The order in your Graduate Planning System (GPS) plan is the one to follow.
NURS 66292 WHNP II: women's primary care
Women's primary care, paired with NURS 66200, has the widest preceptor list of the four. Besides the providers who fit the other courses, Kent State accepts a family-practice physician, an adult NP or an FNP here, which opens family practice and adult primary care offices that see many women. If your preceptor practices family medicine, ask whether women make up enough of the panel to fill your 10 weekly hours with visits that match the course.
The catalog lists 10 weekly contact hours for NURS 66292 but no hour total; the 600-hour program figure implies 150. In the certificate roadmap it falls in summer, when practicums follow Kent State's Practical Experience calendar, a 13-week block in 2026. NURS 66392 WHNP III: the reproductive years and pregnancy
WHNP III, taken with NURS 66300, covers the reproductive years and pregnancy. This is where the rotation page's call for good OB volume matters most, so ask a prospective practice how many prenatal visits its providers see in a typical week.
The WHNP web page mentions family-planning clinics, physician offices and medical centers, while the catalog adds ambulatory care and specialty clinics. Prenatal care can sit in several of these, so judge the preceptor's patient mix rather than the type of site.
A CNM or general OB/GYN is the most direct match for this course's content, though a WHNP or FNP with a strong prenatal panel also fits Kent State's list. Your practicum faculty confirm the choice.
NURS 66492 WHNP IV: a specialty you choose
The last practicum, paired with NURS 66400, lets you pick a women's health specialty. Because the choice is yours, the search starts with your interest and ends with a preceptor your practicum faculty approve. Specialty preceptors owe Kent State the same basics as any other: a year or more in their population focus and role, and a license and certification that are active and carry no restrictions.
Since NURS 66400 needs NURS 66300, WHNP IV always follows WHNP III. That gives you a full term of WHNP III to find the specialty preceptor, and a specialty practice new to Kent State may need an affiliation agreement arranged by the college before any hours count.
The WHNP rotation page is out of date: it shows five course numbers from an older curriculum. Register by the catalog's four practicums, NURS 66192 to NURS 66492, and use the old page only as a guide to preceptor types.
Home state, licenses and logging
The WHNP is fully online, and Kent State places WHNP practicum hours in your state of residence, the same state that licenses you as an RN. The concentration has 17 approved states, and those lists sit on approved states. If you decide to move, tell Student Services ahead of the move. Enrollment is a separate question from licensure: Kent State's disclosure table for its MSN NP concentrations, the WHNP among them, rates California, New York and American Samoa as not meeting licensure requirements, covered on licensure disclosures.
No Kent State page names the WHNP certifying body, so confirm the exam with your concentration coordinator. Clinical time and cases belong in Typhon's NP database inside a fifteen-day window after each clinical day; the Typhon page walks through the logs and the preceptor's final evaluation.

Can an FNP precept every Kent State WHNP practicum?
An FNP is on Kent State's WHNP preceptor list alongside CNMs, WHNPs and general OB/GYNs, and on the wider list for women's primary care. The catch is the setting: the rotation page asks for good GYN or OB volume, so an FNP in a practice with few women's health visits may not fit the gynecology or pregnancy courses. Your practicum faculty decide.
How many clinical hours is Kent State's WHNP?
Kent State's WHNP certificate page says 600 clinical practicum hours in your home state. Three of the four practicums carry a stated 150 hours in the catalog, while NURS 66292 shows only weekly contact hours, so 600 depends on that course also running 150. Can I start WHNP practicum hours before the semester begins?
Not on your own. Counted hours begin on the semester's opening day unless your concentration coordinator approves an earlier start, and they must finish by its closing day. What the MSN handbook does allow ahead of time is meeting your preceptor and completing agency onboarding, so schedule those for the weeks before and your first clinical day can land in week one.
Do Kent State WHNP practicum hours have to be in a women's health clinic?
No single site type is required. Kent State's lists take in family-planning clinics, physician offices and medical centers as well as ambulatory and specialty clinics, and the women's primary care course accepts family practice and adult providers. What the rotation page does ask for is good GYN or OB volume, so the patient mix matters more than the sign on the door.
What if I move to a state that is not on the WHNP approved list?
Kent State asks admitted MSN students to report any move or out-of-state practice right away, because certain state laws may leave Kent State unable to offer practicum courses there. Contact the Office of Student Services before you sign a lease if you can, and read practicums outside Ohio for how host-state boards and SARA fit in.
