Typhon at Kent State: two databases and a 15-day clock

Kent State graduate nursing students record every practicum day in Typhon. There are two databases, one for the NP concentrations and one for CNS, Nurse Educator and NAHSL students, and both run on one clock: every practicum day opens its own 15-day window for the time log and case log that describe it. Your preceptor files the closing evaluation in Typhon as well, and you rate both the preceptor and the site in return.

Which Typhon database you use

Kent State's MSN Student Handbook splits Typhon into two databases by concentration. You work in the one that matches yours, and your practicum faculty review your records there.

Post-master's certificate students take the same practicum courses as the matching concentration, so expect that concentration's database. DNP students should check each project course syllabus: the handbook describes Typhon for MSN and certificate students, and DNP project hours are overseen by the DNP Project Chair.

Setting up your Typhon account

You pay for Typhon once. The handbook describes a single card payment when you first open your account, good for the entire program, and the account stays open through enrollment plus a five-year stretch after graduation, so your clinical record is still within reach long after the last practicum.

Set it up before your first practicum day. Kent State's student-role guidance asks you to plan dates around your preceptor's availability and record them in Typhon, so the preceptor's calendar drives yours rather than the other way round. Your preceptor also hears from faculty as the term opens, with a written guide to Typhon among the materials, so they can follow your schedule and entries from the first week.

Typhon sits alongside the GSN Canvas course, your course sites and your program plan. Our student systems page maps where each part of your practicum lives.

The 15-day rule for time and case logs

The handbook gives time logs and case logs the same deadline: 15 days, counted from the practicum day each entry describes. The clock runs per day, not per week or per month. A practicum day on October 5 needs its logs entered by October 20, and a day on October 6 by October 21.

Time logs record the hours. Case logs record the patients or experiences behind them. What each entry must contain is spelled out in two places: the course syllabus and Kent State's placement guide in the GSN Canvas course. Those directions can differ from course to course, so reread them at the start of each term instead of carrying last semester's habits forward.

Faculty monitor Typhon throughout the term, so gaps are visible. Log the same evening where you can, and treat day 15 as a firm line rather than a target.

The 15-day clock starts separately on each practicum day. Saving a month of entries for one weekend means several of those days are already past their deadline.

What your logs need to show, by concentration

Several Kent State rotation pages set hour rules that only your Typhon record can prove. Record entries clearly enough that faculty can see each requirement met.

  • AGPCNP: a 40-hour ceiling for any one specialty, plus a minimum of 16 hours of underserved care in the summer practicum.
  • AGACNP: in the final practicum, 2 to 3 specialties unfamiliar to you, with at least 50 hours in each.
  • FNP: pediatric time with a PNP, a pediatrician or an FNP whose practice centers on children, and specialty time in cardiology and endocrinology that runs about 35 to 40 hours per block.
  • PMHNP: time spent in faculty supervision is part of each practicum's count, and a PMH APRN precepts at least half of Practicum IV.
  • Nurse Educator: Kent State's program page divides 300 hours evenly between your clinical specialty and the educator role, while a rotation page gives 180 in all, so confirm your figure with faculty.

Every graduate practicum also runs at 75 hours per credit, so a 2-credit course means 150 logged hours. Our hours per credit page turns that into a weekly schedule, and the clinical hours hub has totals by program, including the conflicting figures.

Evaluations in Typhon

Typhon also carries the evaluations. Practicum faculty release the evaluation form to your preceptor, who completes and submits it inside Typhon near the end of the course. You, in turn, fill out evaluations of your preceptor and of the practicum site.

Two details catch students off guard. What your preceptor submits is filed in your record without deciding your grade; that decision belongs to faculty. And Kent State's guidebook calls the form an NP evaluation, including on the page written for CNS, Nurse Educator and administration preceptors, so a preceptor outside NP practice may want reassurance that it applies to them.

Kent State documents midterm evaluations only for undergraduates. Ask your preceptor for feedback along the way rather than waiting for a formal checkpoint. Our preceptor evaluations page covers the grading side in more depth.

Absences, semester dates and conduct

Typhon makes your schedule visible, which is one reason the handbook treats missed days seriously. Whenever you miss a day, tell your preceptor and your faculty member and give them a plan to make it up. Skipping hours without that notice counts as a conduct failure, and the handbook allows an F in the practicum course for it, whatever your other grades.

Timing rules shape the logs as well. Logged hours have to fall inside the semester: nothing before the first day unless your coordinator signs off, and nothing after the last day. A date outside that window belongs in your logs only with that sign-off. Our semester rules page lists the 2026-27 dates.

Compliance lapses stop hours too. If your TB test or flu vaccine expires, the days you work before renewing it add nothing to your total, however well they are logged.

Why Kent State students choose us for Typhon-ready placements

A clean Typhon record starts with the right preceptor. We find preceptors in your community whose practice fits your course and whose schedule can carry about 10 contact hours a week for a 2-credit practicum, and we tell them up front that Kent State uses Typhon for schedules, logs and the final evaluation.

We assemble the preceptor's credentials and the site information that go to your faculty and coordinator for approval, flag any College of Nursing affiliation agreement the site needs, and stay on call through the term. If a preceptor drops mid-semester, we find a replacement quickly so your logs keep moving toward the last day of the semester, and the new preceptor gets the same briefing on Typhon before your first shared day.

Tell us your next course through the form on this page, or read how it works first.

Questions Kent State students ask

How much does Typhon cost Kent State students?

Kent State's handbook gives the structure rather than the amount: one card payment when you first open Typhon, with no repeat charge per course, and an account that stays open for years after you finish. Because amounts change, confirm the current figure with your practicum faculty or the current MSN Student Handbook before you budget for it.

What happens if I enter Typhon logs after the 15 days?

The handbook's 15-day limit for time and case logs is clear, but the public documents do not spell out a penalty for late entries. Ask your practicum faculty how they handle a late log before it happens. Faculty monitor Typhon, so a pattern of late entries will show.

Do Kent State DNP students log hours in Typhon?

Kent State's handbook describes Typhon for MSN and post-master's certificate students. DNP practicum hours sit in the project sequence, NURS 72692 through NURS 72892, under the DNP Project Chair, so check each project syllabus for how hours are recorded. Our DNP practicum hours page covers the totals.

Does my preceptor need to use Typhon?

Yes, for a few tasks. Your preceptor uses Typhon to follow your calendar and entries and to file your end-of-course evaluation. Kent State's faculty email preceptors a written Typhon guide as each semester opens, so a new preceptor has instructions before you begin. If your preceptor has trouble with it, bring in your practicum faculty early, not at evaluation time.

Can I see my Typhon records after I graduate from Kent State?

Yes, for a limited time. The handbook keeps your Typhon account available during the program and for a five-year window once you graduate. Save copies of the summaries you are likely to need later, such as hour totals by specialty or setting, well before that window closes.
