Kent State practicum semester rules: when hours can start and when they must end

Kent State's MSN Student Handbook fences every graduate practicum inside the semester: no hours before the first day unless your concentration coordinator approves, and every hour finished by the last day. The rule: practicum hours live inside the semester

Two lines in the handbook set the boundaries. Hours cannot start before classes open for the semester without a sign-off from your concentration coordinator, and the handbook wants practicum experiences finished by the semester's final day, or sooner. The rule covers every graduate practicum, from a 75-hour role course to a DNP project course.

The start rule has one door, coordinator approval, but it is an exception you request rather than a default, and Kent State publishes no criteria for granting it. If you want it, ask early and in writing, with your preceptor's proposed dates. The end rule has no published exception at all.

Under the handbook, time at a site before the first day (without approval) or after the last day sits outside the course. Plan the whole practicum, every week of it, between those two dates, and log each day in Typhon as you go.

What you can finish before the first day

The handbook allows two things ahead of the term: getting to know your preceptor, and working through the agency's onboarding. Used well, that window turns the first day of the semester into a working day. Record-access or charting training, the agency's own orientation, its dress code and confidentiality steps, and a first conversation about the schedule can all be behind you.

Other steps come earlier still. Full compliance with the Clinical Compliance Policy is a condition of registering for a first practicum, and every practicum course requires special approval before you can enroll. Approval of the preceptor and site must already be in hand from your practicum faculty and concentration coordinator, and that site must have an affiliation agreement with the College of Nursing.

Before the first day of the term, aim to have:

an approved preceptor and site, with the affiliation agreement confirmed
your practicum course registered, with its special approval
every compliance item current through the last day of the term, not just the first
agency onboarding complete
a schedule agreed with your preceptor and entered in Typhon

Graduation applications run on their own windows: March 1 to August 28, 2026 for a December 2026 degree, October 1, 2026 to January 22, 2027 for May 2027, and February 1 to May 28, 2027 for August 2027. Each window closes within about two weeks of the start of the term it belongs to, so if your final practicum falls in that term, apply before or as it begins.

The summer Practical Experience session

Summer at Kent State is a 13-week term, and graduate practicum courses carry the catalog schedule type Practical Experience. In 2027 the Practical Experience session runs May 17 through August 15, beside a 12-week full term (May 24 to August 15) and shorter 3-, 5-, 6- and 8-week sessions. Kent State policies count summer as one of three terms in the year.

Thirteen weeks instead of fifteen raises the weekly load: 150 hours works out to a little over 11 hours a week. Summer has its own deadlines, too. For the 2027 Practical Experience session, the last day to drop without a W is May 27, and the last day to withdraw with a W is July 13. Summer commencement is August 14, and degrees post August 26.

Some plans put a practicum in summer on purpose. The AGACNP certificate roadmap places NURS 61392 there, and the AGPCNP rotation description ties its summer practicum to at least 16 hours of underserved care, explained on the role practicum page. Many clinicians take vacation in summer, so confirm your preceptor can cover all thirteen weeks before you register.

Finals week, shorter sessions and the last day

The handbook's finish line is the semester's last day, but it does not spell out whether that means the last day of classes or the end of finals. In Fall 2026 classes end December 13 and finals run December 14 to 20; in Spring 2027 classes end May 9 and finals run May 10 to 16. Check with your practicum faculty on the date that applies to your course, and plan to the earlier one until you hear back.

Fall and spring also contain 5- and 7-week sessions; Fall 2026's second 7-week session, for example, runs October 19 to December 13. Kent State's practicum math of 10 contact hours a week assumes a full term, and it does not publish whether any practicum runs in a shorter session. Check the session your practicum is registered in through FlashLine before you promise a preceptor a schedule.

Grading needs room as well. Faculty grade from your logs and the preceptor's closing evaluation, so hours squeezed into the last few days leave little time to fix a missing log or chase a late evaluation.

Planning to finish during finals week on assumption is a risk you can avoid. Aim for the last day of classes unless your practicum faculty confirm a later date.

When the semester ends before your hours do

MSN practicum courses have no In Progress (IP) option, so an unfinished practicum does not simply stay open into the next term. The remaining routes are narrow: an Incomplete, which requires documented extenuating circumstances, standing of at least a C and an Incomplete Mark Contract filed by your instructor, or withdrawal before the deadline. Each has consequences for your plan, which the grades and probation page explains.

The better fix is time at the front of the term. If your preceptor can give only a set number of hours each week, the start date that covers the course is fixed, and every week lost to a late approval or unfinished onboarding comes off the end. If you are already short, read behind on clinical hours.

Can Kent State practicum hours start early?

Only if your concentration coordinator approves. The MSN Student Handbook keeps practicum hours out of the days before the term starts unless the coordinator agrees. Getting acquainted with your preceptor and finishing the agency's onboarding need no such approval, so the weeks before day one are the time to prepare rather than log hours.

When does Kent State's Spring 2027 semester start and end?

Spring 2027 classes run January 19 to May 9, 2027, with spring break March 15 to 21 and finals May 10 to 16. Graduate registration for spring opens October 5, 2026. For practicum planning, treat May 9 as your finish line unless your practicum faculty confirm that finals week counts for your course.

Can I do a Kent State practicum in the summer?

Yes, where your program plan puts one. In the catalog, graduate practicums are scheduled as Practical Experience courses, and the 2027 summer session of that type runs 13 weeks, May 17 to August 15. Some plans schedule a practicum there by design, such as the AGACNP certificate's second practicum. Your GPS plan shows which of your courses land in summer.

Do unfinished practicum hours roll into the next semester at Kent State?

Not automatically. Kent State wants practicum experiences finished by the semester's final day, and MSN practicum courses are not eligible for an In Progress mark. An Incomplete needs documented extenuating circumstances and a standing of C or better, and your instructor must set it up. Raise any shortfall with your practicum faculty the week you spot it.

How many credits can a Kent State graduate student take in summer?

Kent State caps graduate summer loads at 6 credits in a 5-week session, 10 in an 8-week session or overlapping sessions, and 12 across the whole summer. A 2-credit practicum with its paired lecture sits well inside that cap, but the 13-week practicum pace is heavier per week than fall or spring.
