What the orientation is and who runs it
According to the graduate handbook for 2025-2026, attendance is mandatory, the session comes four to six months before your first practicum course begins, and the notice comes from your concentration coordinator. It is tied to your first practicum only, and it applies across the MSN concentrations and post-master's certificates.
Concentration coordinators carry a cluster of first-practicum duties in Kent State's handbook. They run this orientation, help with the first placement, give final approval alongside practicum faculty and decide on any request to start hours before the semester opens. That makes the orientation an early chance to hear from the person who helps approve your placement.
The GSN Canvas course has its own orientation module, and the handbook's orientation section calls that course the Graduate Student Nurse course. Kent State does not publish the session's agenda, so expect the notice itself to tell you the format, date and what to prepare.
What the notice signals
When the notice arrives, several clocks are already running. Your first practicum is now roughly a term away. The coordinator's search help, which Kent State schedules for the term just ahead of that course, is about to open. And the compliance deadline is coming, because you must satisfy the Clinical Compliance Policy before registering, and practicum courses need special approval to register.
The notice is not a sign that a preceptor is being arranged for you. The orientation is timed from your first practicum course, so you need to know which course and which term that is. Prerequisite chains in the catalog set the earliest point for each program.

A month-by-month plan from notice to day one
Kent State sets the orientation window, the semester dates and the compliance rule. The monthly targets below are our planning suggestion built around those anchors, assuming the notice arrives about six months out.
- Six months out: attend and readAttend the orientation. Work through the Practicum Information area in GSN Canvas and its Graduate Student Guide for Practicum Placements, and confirm your state approval and RN license status.
- Five months out: define the placementRead the Clinical Rotation Descriptions page for your first course, list candidate sites near home and check each against the GSN Canvas guidance on agencies that forbid direct contact. Begin compliance items, starting with the federal and state background checks.
- Four months out: approach preceptorsReach out through the right channel for each agency and bring serious candidates to your coordinator. Ask whether each site holds a current affiliation agreement.
- Three months out: submit for reviewSend preceptor details to practicum faculty, with the preceptor's updated CV going to your graduate faculty member. If a new agreement is needed, keep a backup site alive while the college works on it.
- Two months out: approval and complianceSecure final approval from practicum faculty and your coordinator, close out every compliance item and request the special approval that practicum registration requires.
- The last month: onboarding and setupFinish agency onboarding, meet your preceptor, get your College name badge ordered, open your Typhon account and agree on a schedule inside the semester dates.
- Week one: hours beginStart hours on or after the first day of the semester and log each practicum day in Typhon within 15 days.
Worked example: a first practicum in Spring 2027
Spring 2027 classes run Jan 19 to May 9, 2027. Counting back four to six months from Jan 19 puts the orientation roughly between mid-July and mid-September 2026. The term before is Fall 2026, Aug 24 to Dec 13, which is when the coordinator's search help applies.

Hours may not begin before Jan 19 without coordinator approval, though meeting your preceptor and onboarding in December or early January are both allowed. Hours must end by May 9. A 2-credit practicum means 150 hours, close to 10 a week, and our page on practicum semester rules covers the fine print. Mistakes that cost students a term
The most expensive mistake is treating orientation as the moment to start thinking rather than the moment to start acting. Students who leave with no shortlist lose the weeks that a new affiliation agreement or an agency's own request process would have needed.
Other mistakes are smaller but just as costly. Some students miss the notice and learn about the orientation late. Some let an annual item such as the TB test or flu vaccine lapse between orientation and day one, which stops hours until it is renewed. Some build a preceptor schedule that starts ahead of the semester's opening day with no coordinator sign-off.

Is Kent State's first practicum orientation mandatory?
Yes. The MSN Student Handbook AY 2025-2026 calls it mandatory and places it four to six months before practicum one begins, with the coordinator's notice as your cue. If a conflict makes the date impossible, contact your coordinator as soon as you see the notice rather than after the session, and ask how to cover what you would miss.
I have not received an orientation notice. What should I do?
Check which term holds your first practicum in your Graduate Planning System plan, then count back 4 to 6 months. If you are inside that window, contact your concentration coordinator and look at the orientation module in the GSN Canvas course. A missed notice is easy to fix early and much harder to fix a month before the term.
Is the orientation online or in person?
Kent State does not publish the format, so the coordinator's notice is the place to look. For context, the catalog defines fully online programs, such as the PMHNP, WHNP, AGCNS, Nurse Educator and NAHSL concentrations, as requiring no campus visits for any course. Mostly online concentrations like the FNP include some campus attendance.
Can I start looking for a preceptor before orientation?
Yes, and it usually helps. No published Kent State rule sets a start date for the search, and the search is primarily your responsibility. The coordinator's formal help comes in the term before your first practicum, but arriving at that point with a candidate already in view makes the help far more useful and leaves room for an agreement.
Is there an orientation before every practicum course?
The handbook ties the mandatory orientation to the first practicum course. For later practicums, course faculty and coordinators step in as needed, with the DNP program director available to doctoral students. Each new course still requires an approved preceptor, a site with a current agreement and current compliance. Ask your coordinator whether your concentration adds any course-specific sessions.
