Kent State's Nurse Educator concentration and certificate share two practicums. NURS 67092 keeps you in your clinical specialty, and NURS 60592 places you with an experienced nurse educator, either in a nursing program or in staff development. Two practicums with two different preceptors
The Nurse Educator practicums split cleanly in two. The first builds depth in your own clinical specialty, and the second puts you in a teaching role beside an experienced educator. Kent State's program page divides the 300 hours evenly: 150 in your clinical specialty and 150 in the educator role.
Because the two courses call for different people, expect two preceptors and possibly two organizations, one clinical and one educational. Hours count at each only after the college has a current affiliation agreement in place with that organization, something the college arranges itself.

NURS 67092: the specialty area practicum
NURS 67092 shares its name with NURS 60607 Clinical Nursing and Education Issues in a Specialty Area, a 2-credit course in the same concentration. Before you register you need either the health assessment, pathophysiology and pharmacology trio (NURS 60015, NURS 60045, NURS 60441) or NURS 60016, plus full clinical compliance.
Kent State's public pages describe this as 150 hours in your clinical specialty but publish no separate preceptor profile for it. Bring your specialty and a candidate to your practicum faculty, who confirm the fit against the syllabus. The college's general bar still applies: a license and certification in good standing with no restrictions, at least twelve months of clinical practice, and sign-off from the employer, as preceptor requirements explains.
Certificate students reach this course by the shorter route: the Nurse Educator certificate requires NURS 60016 along with the educator courses, then the same two practicums.
NURS 60592: teaching beside an experienced educator
The Nursing Education Practicum is the larger course at 3 credits, with a weekly load of one lecture hour plus ten practical contact hours. You need NURS 60601 Curriculum and Instruction, NURS 60602 Roles and Evaluation and NURS 60605 Nursing Education with Technology first, so it sits near the end of your plan.
Your preceptor is a seasoned nurse educator whose work is academic, professional development, or both. In practice that can mean faculty in a nursing program or an educator in a hospital's staff-development department. A Certified Nurse Educator is one of the preceptor types on Kent State's recruiting page.
The rotation page says faculty planning for this course begins in mid-February of the preceding semester. Having an educator candidate in hand by then gives that planning conversation something concrete to work with.
300 hours or 180: reading Kent State's two figures
Kent State publishes two totals. The Nurse Educator program page says 300 practicum hours, split 150 and 150. The Nurse Educator rotation description in the preceptor guidebook says 180. The catalog lists only weekly contact hours: ten practical hours in each course, which over a 15-week term matches the program page's 150 and 150.
Neither figure should reach a preceptor until your syllabus confirms it. The syllabus for each course sets what you must log, and the hours you promise a clinician or educator should match it. The clinical hours hub shows how this conflict compares with the other concentrations.
Quote the hour figure from your syllabus, not from the older rotation page, when you first ask a preceptor to take you on.
Where and how you complete the hours
Classes are fully online, but each practicum means showing up in person near home, in a state where your RN license is valid. Kent State lists 21 approved states for this concentration on approved states. The catalog calls the educator credential optional and not required in any state.
Educator hours go into Typhon's second database, the one shared with CNS and NAHSL students, and each day's entries are due within 15 days. Full compliance under the college's Clinical Compliance Policy comes before you register for NURS 67092, and it has to stay current through NURS 60592.
Kent State publishes no ban on completing these practicums at your own employer; the only published workplace ban is the PMHNP's. Your practicum faculty decide, and the workplace practicum page sets out what Kent State says for each program.

Does my Kent State educator preceptor need to be a Certified Nurse Educator?
Kent State's rotation description asks for an experienced nurse educator, and the recruiting page lists Certified Nurse Educator among the roles that can precept. Certification is not stated as a requirement for NURS 60592. The educator still needs an unrestricted license, twelve months or more of clinical practice and a go-ahead from their employer, and your practicum faculty approve the final choice.
Should I take the three foundation courses or NURS 60016 before NURS 67092?
The MSN allows either route into the specialty practicum: NURS 60015, NURS 60045 and NURS 60441 (9 credits) or NURS 60016 (3 credits). The certificate uses NURS 60016. The choice changes your credit count and schedule, so settle it with your concentration coordinator and record it in your Graduate Planning System (GPS) plan.
Can my teaching practicum be at a hospital instead of a college?
Yes. Kent State describes NURS 60592 as taking place with an experienced nurse educator in academic and/or professional development settings, so a hospital education department fits the wording. Confirm with your practicum faculty that the educator's work, such as orientation, staff courses or competency programs, meets the course objectives before you commit.
When should I start looking for Nurse Educator preceptors?
Start with NURS 67092, your first practicum. A required orientation for first-practicum students is held four to six months ahead, and coordinator support for that first placement comes in the prior term. For NURS 60592, faculty planning begins in mid-February of the semester before, so begin the educator search while you are still in the educator courses.
Can I do the Nurse Educator practicums outside Ohio?
Yes, if you live in one of the 21 states Kent State lists for the Nurse Educator. Both practicums happen in person where you live, under your RN license there, and each organization must be under an affiliation agreement with the college. If you move during the program, tell Student Services straight away, because certain state laws can rule practicum courses out.
