Your preceptor dropped out mid-semester: a recovery plan built on Kent State's rules

The first day: four moves that protect your term

Most of the harm from a lost preceptor comes from delay and silence. Kent State's MSN handbook expects every absence and makeup plan to be reported to both preceptor and faculty, and breaking the practicum conduct standards can bring an F for the course whatever your other grades. So the first message goes to your practicum faculty, before you contact any new clinician.

1. Email your practicum facultyUse your Kent State email. Give the date your preceptor stopped, the hours logged, the hours left and any makeup idea you have. After the first practicum, faculty and coordinators help with placement as needed, and this is that moment.
2. Bring your Typhon logs up to dateKent State wants each practicum day in Typhon, time log and case log, no later than 15 days afterward. Enter every day you completed while the departing preceptor can still see your schedule and entries.
3. Ask how the partial hours are handledKent State's public pages do not describe a mid-course preceptor change, so ask faculty in writing how the completed hours and the final evaluation will be documented.
4. Check your compliance datesA new agency reviews your file from scratch, and a lapsed annual TB test or flu vaccine stops your hours from counting until it is renewed.

A replacement must fit the same course

Losing a preceptor leaves the course requirements exactly where they were. The replacement still has to clear Kent State's baseline for role, licensure, a year of practice and employer approval, which our preceptor requirements page sets out item by item.

Concentration rules matter even more mid-semester, because the easiest clinician to reach is often the wrong fit. PMHNP Practicum II has to be precepted by someone who prescribes, a psychiatrist or PMH APRN, and Practicum IV needs a PMH APRN for half the hours or more; no PMHNP practicum may sit at your own workplace. FNP pediatric time belongs with a pediatrician, a PNP or an FNP whose practice centers on children. AGPCNP students face a 40-hour ceiling in any one specialty, and the last AGACNP practicum rotates through two or three specialties new to the student, each for 50 hours or more.

Match the replacement to the course objectives first and the open calendar second.

Onboarding at the new site

Every agency brings its own onboarding: record-access or charting training, HIPAA review, its dress code and sometimes a background recheck or drug screen that the agency sets. Kent State allows students to meet a preceptor and complete onboarding before hours begin, so start the agency's paperwork as soon as your practicum faculty have the candidate's details instead of waiting for the last approval email. Ask each candidate site for its onboarding list on the first call, so nothing surprises you once hours are due.
