The dates that set your pace
As of late September 2026, Fall 2026 is under way and the next practicum terms are Spring 2027 and the Summer 2027 Practical Experience session. These are Kent State's published dates, with two health-system deadlines that fall inside the same stretch:

Courses can be added through the seventh calendar day of the term, or through the fourteenth with instructor approval, so a late practicum registration leaves little room. Our practicum semester rules page explains the start and end limits.

A fast placement is a set of steps that overlap rather than wait on one another. Start all six this week:
- Check your compliance fileUnder the Clinical Compliance Policy you must be fully compliant before registering for a first practicum. Confirm BLS, background checks, health insurance, immunizations and a physical within one year, and check the renewal dates on your TB test and flu vaccine.
- Tell your coordinatorSay which course and term you need, what you have tried, and that you are moving quickly. The coordinator decides on any start before the semester's first day and helps with first placements.
- Search where a yes comes quickestFavor practices where the preceptor and employer can decide directly over systems that take students only through application windows.
- Ask about the agreement the moment someone agreesA new affiliation agreement has no published lead time at Kent State, so find out at once whether one exists, and ask your practicum faculty how to request one if not.
- Finish onboarding earlyKent State permits preceptor meetings and agency onboarding ahead of the first class day. Use the weeks before Jan 19 for record-access training and the agency's own checks.
- Set up Typhon and a schedulePay the one-time Typhon fee when you first open your account, build a schedule with your preceptor, and plan to log each day within 15 days.
Where fast placements come from
Speed depends less on effort than on how a site decides. An independent practice where the NP and the owner can approve a student in one conversation moves differently from a system with fixed cycles. Cleveland Clinic and the UH Behavioral Health Institute run set windows, and MetroHealth and Aultman work through ACEMAPP; each is worth pursuing only if its calendar still fits your term.
Sites already under contract with the College of Nursing skip the longest unknown step. Kent State says it has more than 750 clinical partners, so ask your practicum faculty which agencies near you have current agreements before choosing where to push hardest. When the hours math gets tight
Kent State ties 75 practicum hours to each credit; a 2-credit course therefore means 150 hours, roughly 10 contact hours weekly over a 15-week term. Start three weeks late and the same hours squeeze into twelve weeks, which your preceptor's schedule has to absorb. Kent State's AGACNP rotation page already asks for 16 to 20 clinical hours each week, grouped on consecutive days when possible. The hours per credit page runs the numbers by course.
If the numbers will not work, raise it with your coordinator early. The choices sit with Kent State, from an approved early start to moving the course to a later term in your Graduate Planning System plan. Questions Kent State students ask
Is it too late to find a preceptor for Spring 2027?
No. Spring classes begin Jan 19, 2027, so months remain for a search, employer approval and onboarding. The tighter pieces are Cleveland Clinic's window, which shuts Sept 30, and any new affiliation agreement, for which no lead time is published. Start now and ask about agreement status early.
Can I start practicum hours before the semester begins?
Only with your concentration coordinator's approval. Without it, hours start on the semester's first day. You may still meet your preceptor and complete agency onboarding ahead of time, so put those weeks to work. Every hour must still be complete by the semester's last day.
How much time should I allow for a new affiliation agreement?
Kent State publishes no lead time. The College of Nursing arranges agreements with the facility, and the university's 2015 template has to be fully signed and with the contracts office before it takes effect. Ask your practicum faculty as soon as a preceptor agrees, and keep a site with a current agreement in play as a backup.
Can I register for the practicum before my preceptor is confirmed?
Practicum courses need special approval to register, and a first practicum also needs a complete compliance file. Kent State does not publish whether a confirmed preceptor is part of that approval, so ask your coordinator or the Office of Academic Advising and Student Services how your concentration handles it.
Can I move my practicum into the summer session?
The Summer 2027 Practical Experience session runs 13 weeks, May 17 to Aug 15, a little shorter than a fall or spring term, so the same hours fill fewer weeks. Whether a course can move there depends on your plan and concentration, so ask your coordinator and check your Graduate Planning System plan before counting on it.
