Kent State student systems: where each part of your practicum lives
A Kent State graduate practicum runs through half a dozen systems. FlashLine handles registration and forms, Kent State email carries official notices, Canvas and the GSN course hold your courses and placement instructions, GPS holds your program plan, and Typhon records every practicum day. This page maps each one to the practicum task it serves.

Your practicum, system by system
Each system owns one slice of the practicum. Knowing which one to open saves a round of emails.

FlashLine: registration, holds and forms
FlashLine is Kent State's secure portal, and the administrative side of every practicum runs through it. You register, clear registration holds, withdraw from courses, check grades and GPA, and reach advising tools, financial aid and your account balance there. It also opens your Kent State email and Canvas. New students sign in for the first time at welcome.kent.edu.
Practicum registration carries an extra gate. Practicum courses need special approval before you can register, and the first one also needs a complete compliance file, so a registration attempt is often when students discover a missing step. Spring 2027 registration for graduate students begins on October 5, 2026, which makes early October a sensible target for having your spring placement approved.
Kent State also lists the forms a delayed practicum can involve: the Request for Graduate Leave of Absence, filed in FlashLine; the Registration Exception Form for changes after deadlines; the Application for Graduate Re-Enrollment; and the Application for Extension of Time Limits. Kent State email: where notices land
Kent State email runs on Microsoft 365 and opens from FlashLine. Every official notice goes there, and Kent State tells students to check it daily. For nursing students that includes College of Nursing messages about curricular changes, such as a change to practicum hours or an added course.
Treat it as your placement record as well. When your practicum faculty or concentration coordinator approves a preceptor or an early start, an answer in your Kent State inbox gives you a dated record you can point to later. For time-sensitive alerts, Kent State also runs Flash ALERTS emergency texts and a mobile app.
Canvas and the GSN course
Canvas is Kent State's official learning management system; the move from Blackboard finished on July 1, 2022. Your courses, practicum courses included, run there, and each practicum syllabus carries the logging directions for that course.
Every admitted graduate student also joins the College's GSN Canvas course. Much of the placement detail Kent State does not post publicly sits there, including the Practicum Information tab, the placement guide for graduate students and the procedures for agencies where students may not approach preceptors themselves. The GSN Canvas course page walks through it.
One naming trap: the preceptor guidebook's student-role page still places the GSN course in Blackboard. That page is out of date, and the course lives in Canvas.
GPS: the plan that sets your practicum terms
GPS combines Kent State's degree audit with a Plans tab of future courses, and it is the official record used for graduation clearance. The catalog calls it the Graduation Planning System and the MSN handbook calls it the Graduate Planning System; either way it sits in FlashLine under the Student menu, Resources, then Advising and GPS.
With no MSN roadmap in the catalog, GPS is where your practicum sequence actually lives. Advising staff in the College load a standard plan at admission and revise it after a leave or a change of concentration. Review it before each registration: the handbook warns that enrolling late can shut you out of required courses and push back graduation.
Behind GPS sits Banner, Kent State's student information system and the home of the official class schedule. The audit refreshes from Banner nightly, so a registration change shows in GPS the following day.
Your GPS plan shows the term that holds each practicum. Read it as soon as it loads and count back two terms to find when your preceptor search should start.
Typhon and the compliance tracker
Typhon is the practicum-tracking system for MSN and certificate students, holding your sites, preceptors, profile, encounters, patient logs, portfolio and evaluations. NP concentrations use one College database, and CNS, Nurse Educator and NAHSL students use a second. A one-time fee is paid by card when you first sign in, access lasts while you are enrolled and for five years after graduation, and each practicum day's logs are due within 15 days. Compliance lives in a separate system run by a third-party tracking vendor, where you upload the items the Clinical Compliance Policy requires and keep your own profile current. The BSN handbook names CastleBranch; the MSN handbook names no vendor, so follow the instructions you receive after admission. The compliance policy page lists each item.
Library and tech help for online students
University Libraries serves distance students through a Distance Learning guide, Ask A Librarian chat and off-campus database access with your FlashLine credentials. ILLiad handles article delivery and interlibrary loan, LIBRARYsearch lets you pick up books at more than 100 OhioLINK libraries, and students who attend no campus and live more than 30 miles from an OhioLINK library can have books delivered home. The Nursing Library Guide covers CINAHL and PubMed, the databases DNP project work and evidence-based assignments lean on.
For technical problems, Kent State IT runs a 24x7 Get Help service, Canvas Support and TechHelp, which includes the Service and Repair Center, a Library TechHelp desk and Regional Campus IT Support. If a system problem threatens a Typhon deadline, tell your practicum faculty the same day as well as IT.

Questions Kent State students ask
Does Kent State still use Blackboard for nursing courses?
No. Canvas is Kent State's official learning management system, and the university finished retiring Blackboard on July 1, 2022. A few older College of Nursing pages, including the preceptor guidebook's student-role page, still mention Blackboard for the GSN course. Treat those references as out of date and look for GSN in Canvas.
Where do I find my Kent State nursing program plan?
In GPS, reached through FlashLine. Advising staff load a standard plan once you are admitted and revise it when you take a leave or switch concentrations. Because the catalog carries no MSN roadmap, GPS is the authoritative record of which term holds each practicum. Look it over before every registration.
Is Typhon part of Canvas?
No. Typhon is a separate practicum-tracking system with its own account and a one-time fee paid when you first sign in. Canvas holds your courses and the GSN course, while Typhon holds your logs, sites, preceptors and evaluations. Your syllabus and the placement guide in GSN explain how the two connect for each course.
Where do I see my practicum grade at Kent State?
FlashLine shows your grades and GPA, and Kent State's registrar also points to FlashFAST for midterm and final grades. Practicum courses carry letter grades, so the grade enters your GPA. Practicum faculty assign it once they have reviewed your logs and the evaluation your preceptor files in Typhon; see grades and probation.
Who helps when a Kent State system is not working?
