No-direct-contact agencies: asking for a preceptor the way the agency expects
Some agencies that host Kent State graduate students do not let students approach preceptors on their own. The MSN Student Handbook sends you to the GSN Canvas course for each agency's instructions, and that list is not public. Check it before you send a single message to a preceptor.

What Kent State's handbook says
The MSN Student Handbook AY 2025-2026 notes that some agencies forbid students from contacting preceptors directly, and it places the instructions for those agencies in the GSN Canvas course. The note sits alongside the handbook's description of coordinator help with a first placement, and the two belong together: you still find the preceptor, but at these agencies you do it through the agency's own channel.
The handbook names the course two ways, the Graduate Student Nurse course in its orientation section and the Graduate Student Nursing Canvas course in its practicum section. Both mean the same place. One page of Kent State's preceptor guidebook still describes the course as living in Blackboard, which looks out of date; Canvas is its current home.

Why the rule matters to your placement
Kent State does not publish any agency's reasons, and guessing at them helps no one. What the rule does is clear: it moves first contact out of your inbox and into a process the agency sets.
That process protects something you depend on. Your hours only count at facilities the College of Nursing has a current agreement with, and those agreements rest on a working relationship between the college and each agency. Following an agency's stated route keeps that relationship, and your own chances there, in good standing.
Kent State publishes no specific consequence for a student who skips an agency's process. Treat the agency's route as the only one that counts, and treat any direct approach, however friendly, as something to clear with practicum faculty first. Waiting for the proper channel costs little next to starting off on the wrong foot with a site you need.

Read the agency instructions before you build your shortlist, not after. Recheck them before each new practicum course instead of relying on what you read at orientation, since your sites and your preceptor needs change from course to course.
If you cannot see the course or cannot find the agency instructions, ask your concentration coordinator to check your access to the course. Getting that fixed early is far easier than untangling an outreach mistake later.
How to work within a no-contact agency
A listed agency can still be a strong placement. The work is simply routed differently.

Special cases students ask about
Your own employer may be on the list. The rule concerns you as a Kent State student, so follow the agency's student process even where you already work. Some concentrations limit workplace sites anyway: the PMHNP concentration already rules out a student's own workplace, and NAHSL guidance favors a site outside your usual unit. A friend or former colleague who precepts at a listed agency is still reached through the agency's process. If that preceptor offers to take you, thank them and point the offer toward the agency's route and your practicum faculty, so the placement is built on the right footing.
For an agency that does not appear in the GSN Canvas instructions, including one outside Ohio, ask practicum faculty how to approach it before your first contact. The absence of a listing is a question to confirm, not a green light to assume.
How a central route affects your timeline
A no-contact agency adds a step between you and a yes, and Kent State publishes no timeline for these agency processes or for new affiliation agreements. Hours still have to fit inside the semester, starting no earlier than the first day without coordinator approval and ending by the last.

Questions Kent State students ask
Where can I see which agencies forbid contacting preceptors?
It is posted inside GSN Canvas, the college's graduate course space that each admitted student is enrolled in, and nowhere public. If you cannot find it after logging in, ask your concentration coordinator to point you to it before you contact any preceptor at an agency you are considering.
Can I contact a preceptor I already know at a no-contact agency?
Not on your own. Kent State's public documents describe no exception for existing relationships, and the agency's instructions in GSN Canvas govern how requests are made. Tell practicum faculty about the connection, follow the agency's process and let that preceptor's interest be expressed through it. A personal connection can still help once the request travels the proper route.
Does a no-contact rule mean the agency will not take Kent State students?
Not by itself. The rule governs how you ask, not the answer. Whether a placement opens depends on the agency's own process, preceptor availability, an agreement between the facility and the college that is still in force, and a yes from practicum faculty and your coordinator. Treat a listed agency as one option among several and keep a parallel search running.
What if I already contacted a preceptor at a listed agency?
Tell your practicum faculty or concentration coordinator promptly, explain what happened and follow the agency's stated process from that point. Kent State publishes no penalty for this situation, so let faculty guide the next step rather than following up with the preceptor yourself. Acting quickly and openly is the best way to keep the site available.
Do these agency rules apply to Kent State BSN students?
In practice they are a graduate concern. Pre-licensure BSN clinicals are school-arranged, and for the senior capstone, university and hospital faculty and staff assign the RN preceptor, so BSN students are not the ones approaching preceptors.
