The GSN Canvas course: where Kent State keeps your practicum instructions

What GSN is, and the names it goes by
GSN is a course, not a department. The MSN Student Handbook AY 2025-2026 describes it as the college's graduate Canvas course, joined by every admitted graduate student, whether you are in an MSN concentration, a post-master's certificate or the DNP. The college uses it for material that applies to every graduate practicum rather than to a single class.
The handbook spells out the acronym two ways. Its orientation section calls it the Graduate Student Nurse course, and its practicum section calls it the Graduate Student Nursing Canvas Learn course. Both point to the same place, so when a faculty email uses either name, open the same course.
One public page lags behind: a student-role page in the preceptor guidebook still puts the GSN course in Blackboard. The current handbook puts it in Canvas, and when the two disagree, the handbook is the document to follow.
What lives inside the course
Kent State's handbook names the areas and documents below as part of GSN. Their full text opens only for enrolled graduate students, so the table says what each piece is for rather than what it says.

Alongside the orientation module, watch for notice of the mandatory first-practicum orientation, which the handbook sets 4 to 6 months out from the start of your first practicum course. The Practicum Information area and the placement guide
Most of what a placement needs sits in the Practicum Information area. The handbook lists four items there: the placement guide (formally, the Graduate Student Guide for Practicum Placements), the instructions for finding preceptors, the agency onboarding standards and the compliance deadlines. Read all four before you draft a single message to a clinic.
The placement guide earns its keep twice. It shapes how Kent State wants you to search, and it is one of two places, with your course syllabus, that carry directions for logging time and cases in Typhon. If the guide and a syllabus seem to differ on a detail, ask your practicum faculty which one governs that course.

The list of agencies that bar students from contacting preceptors directly is kept only in GSN. Check it before you reach out to any clinic, even one a classmate used last year.
What Kent State publishes openly, and what stays in GSN
A good deal is public: the catalog, the MSN Student Handbook, the preceptor guidebook and a Clinical Rotation Description for each concentration. The rotation pages set out course objectives and the ideal setting for each practicum, and the guidebook's student-role page tells you to review them in the semester before a practicum starts.
What stays inside GSN is the working layer: the placement guide itself, the agency-specific contact instructions, the badge order and the liability form. No public page reproduces them, so this site describes their purpose and leaves their wording to the course. When a question turns on that exact text, the answer sits in GSN or with your concentration coordinator.
The split is useful for planning. Public pages tell you who can precept you and what a good setting looks like, which you can study before admission. The badge and the liability insurance form
Two practical items are handled through GSN. The first is the College of Nursing name badge. The handbook describes a badge carrying your name and concentration along with College of Nursing, with no degrees or outside affiliations, and it is worn only at practicum.
The second is the liability insurance form. Kent State covers graduate students for liability while they are in practicum courses; the handbook flags a sizable deductible and leaves a personal policy up to you. Completing the form belongs on your list of things finished before the first practicum day; our liability insurance and badge page has the rest.
Neither task takes long, but both tend to get left until a site asks for them. Order the badge as soon as your first placement is settled so it is in hand before agency onboarding begins.
A first-week checklist for the GSN course
When the course opens to you, work through it in this order
- Open the Practicum Information area and save the Graduate Student Guide for Practicum Placements where you can find it again.
- Find the agencies flagged as off-limits for direct preceptor contact and note any within driving distance of home.
- Copy every compliance deadline into your calendar, with reminders for items that renew yearly, such as the TB test and the flu vaccine.
- Read the agency onboarding standards so nothing a site asks for on day one is a surprise.
- Locate the badge order and the liability insurance form and note when each is due.
- Set your concentration's Clinical Rotation Description beside the guide's search instructions and list what a fitting site needs.
That order front-loads the things that stall a search. An agency on the no-contact list, or a compliance item that expires mid-semester, costs more time than anything else in the course, because no practicum hours count while an item has lapsed. Questions Kent State students ask
Is GSN an office I can contact at Kent State?
No. GSN is a Canvas course for admitted graduate students, so there is no GSN office to reach. Placement questions go to your concentration coordinator or practicum faculty. Enrollment, compliance monitoring and license verification go to Academic Advising and Student Services in Henderson Hall. The course is simply where those people post shared instructions.
Why is Kent State's practicum placement guide missing from the public website?
Kent State keeps the guide inside the GSN Canvas course instead of on a public web page, so only enrolled graduate students can open it. Before admission, the public Clinical Rotation Descriptions and the MSN Student Handbook cover preceptor and setting rules. The guide adds Kent State's own search instructions once you are in the program.
Does the GSN course replace my practicum course syllabus?
No. GSN carries material shared by every graduate practicum, such as the placement guide, onboarding standards and compliance deadlines. Each practicum course still has its own syllabus with objectives and logging directions. Typhon directions appear in both, so read the syllabus next to the guide at the start of every term.
Is Kent State's GSN course in Canvas or Blackboard?
Canvas. The 2025-2026 MSN Student Handbook calls it the Graduate Student Nursing Canvas Learn course. An older student-role page in Kent State's preceptor guidebook still mentions Blackboard, which looks out of date. If a link on that page fails, look for the course in Canvas instead.
What should I do if the GSN course is missing after admission?
Contact Academic Advising and Student Services or your concentration coordinator. The handbook says every admitted graduate student joins the course, and its Practicum Information area holds the search instructions and compliance deadlines. Losing even a few weeks of access can squeeze the time you have before your first practicum.
