Kent State online nursing for Pennsylvania residents
Pennsylvania shows up on every one of Kent State's seven online program lists, from the PMHNP and WHNP through the Nurse Educator, NAHSL, DNP and RN-to-BSN. The snag is on Kent State's licensure page, which rates the AGCNS (MSN and certificate) and the campus BSN as DOES NOT MEET for Pennsylvania. Practicum happens in person in Pennsylvania, under a license valid where you live.

Kent State leaves the hybrid FNP, AGPCNP and AGACNP off the enrollment page, since each brings students to the Kent Campus at points; ask the Office of Student Services about them. Kent State's APRN program pages also say the college has yet to decide on licensure beyond Ohio, at odds with the disclosure, so confirm the Pennsylvania result before you enroll.
The AGCNS puzzle for Pennsylvania nurses
No other state pairs an approved online AGCNS with a DOES NOT MEET result on Kent State's own disclosure. The label covers the MSN and the certificate alike, and Kent State gives no reason, so you could finish the program at home and then meet a licensing hurdle as a CNS in Pennsylvania.

Practicum in Pennsylvania: board rules and preceptors
We looked for a Pennsylvania rule that makes out-of-state distance programs seek Board approval before clinical placements and found none; the Board's Distance Education Application applies to programs it has already approved. SARA, which Kent State joined in 2015, covers the online program but leaves clinicals to each board.
The AANP files Pennsylvania under reduced practice: an NP practices under a written physician agreement for an entire career, and prescribing takes collaborative agreements with two or more physicians. Kent State's preceptor requirements apply on top.
Among the largest systems are UPMC, Penn State Health, Geisinger, Jefferson Health and Penn Medicine, across the Pittsburgh metro (about 2.4 million people), greater Philadelphia, Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton and Harrisburg-Carlisle. They show where preceptors work, not sites committed to Kent State, and a site's hours count only once an affiliation agreement with the College of Nursing covers it. No Pennsylvania preceptor incentive is on record.
Your license for Pennsylvania practicum
Pennsylvania's code leaves room for visiting students. Section 21.118 of Title 49 lets a nurse holding an RN license from some other U.S. jurisdiction, while enrolled in an accredited BSN or graduate program, take part in required clinical work without a Pennsylvania license, as long as no pay changes hands beyond stipends, scholarships or awards tied to the program. A final-form Board rulemaking, due for IRRC review on October 15, 2026, keeps that clause in substantially the same form.
Kent State wants your RN license unrestricted and issued for your state of residence, which is also your practicum state (RN license for practicum). Since July 7, 2025, when the Nurse Licensure Compact took full effect in Pennsylvania, a multistate license has been an option; Kent State's student services office, which verifies licenses, can say how it records yours. Pennsylvania has not enacted the APRN Compact.

Questions Kent State students ask
Can I do the Kent State PMHNP online from Pennsylvania?
Yes. Pennsylvania appears on Kent State's PMHNP list, MSN and certificate alike, and the NP licensure row shows MEETS there. All four practicums take place in person in Pennsylvania. Can I take Kent State's FNP while living in Pennsylvania?
No Kent State page answers that. The FNP, AGPCNP and AGACNP combine online courses with Kent Campus sessions and are missing from the enrollment page for every state. Their licensure row does read MEETS for Pennsylvania, but that concerns licensure after graduation, not admission, so raise it with student services before applying.
Does Pennsylvania make Kent State get approval before my clinicals?
We found no Pennsylvania Board of Nursing requirement of that kind for out-of-state distance programs. Kent State's state authorization office logs out-of-state placements with NC-SARA, and before a single hour counts, your site must be under an affiliation agreement that the College of Nursing arranges with the facility.
What if I move from Ohio to Pennsylvania in the middle of my program?
Contact Kent State's Office of Student Services as soon as the move is likely; the college expects enrolled RN-to-BSN, MSN and DNP students to report any relocation. Pennsylvania's place on all seven lists helps, but continuing is Kent State's call, and your preceptor, site and license would all shift to Pennsylvania.
