Ohio courses and Ohio practicum call for an active, unrestricted Ohio license; if you live and precept in another state, that state's license is the one Kent State checks. Which RN license Kent State asks for
The rule sits in the 2026-2027 catalog and applies to RN-to-BSN, MSN, DNP and post-master's certificate students. The license must be active and unrestricted, and the state that issues it depends on two facts about you: where you take courses and where you complete practicum hours.
For online students outside Ohio, the catalog's phrase is the state of residence and practice. Both halves carry weight. You live there, you precept there, and the license comes from that same state.

Online students living outside Ohio
Kent State's fully online concentrations, AGCNS, Nurse Educator, NAHSL, PMHNP and WHNP, set practicum in your home state, under the RN license you hold there. The coursework is online, but the hours are in person with a preceptor near you. The WHNP program page says it directly: your practicum hours take place where you reside.
Holding a license in a state is a separate question from whether Kent State can enroll you from it. The approved-states list answers that one program by program, and for every graduate program it covers fewer than half the states, so check Kent State's approved states first.
Three NP concentrations, the AGACNP, AGPCNP and FNP, are labeled mostly online because some of their courses require attendance on the Kent Campus. Since the catalog links on-campus courses to an Ohio license, students in those concentrations who hold a license from elsewhere should put the question to Kent State's Office of Academic Advising and Student Services early.
When proof of license is due: two Kent State answers
Kent State publishes two different deadlines for showing the right license. Read them side by side, then plan to the earlier one.

The handbook's date is the stricter one, and it arrives well before any practicum question comes up. If you are waiting on a new state's license, ask your concentration coordinator which date applies to your admission and keep the reply with your program records.
Each state board sets its own processing times, so apply for the license as soon as you know which state your practicum will be in.
How Kent State monitors your license while you study
The Office of Academic Advising and Student Services verifies your license with the state board when you are admitted and checks again when it renews. One duty stays with you: the MSN Student Handbook requires you to report any change in license status.
Put your renewal date on the practicum calendar next to your TB test and flu vaccine. A license that lapses or picks up a restriction no longer meets the active, unrestricted standard, so if either happens, talk to your practicum faculty and to student services before your next clinical day. Your preceptor's license is a separate check. Kent State asks preceptors for an active, unrestricted license and certification in their area of practice; the full standard is on preceptor requirements.
Compact licenses, Ohio law and moving
Ohio has taken part in the Nurse Licensure Compact since January 1, 2023. The Ohio Board of Nursing explains that a multistate license is held in your primary state of residence and lets you practice across the other compact states. Kent State's published rule names an Ohio license or a home-state license, and the catalog text leaves the multistate case unaddressed. If you hold one from another compact state and want an Ohio site, put the question to the college's advising office, and have an answer before you plan around it.
NP students often ask whether practicum needs an APRN license. Section 4723.32 of the Ohio Revised Code lets APRN students in a qualifying program practice as students, under the program's auspices and supervised by an APRN serving as faculty, teaching assistant or preceptor. Your RN license is what Kent State checks; Ohio APRN practice covers the rest.
A move reopens every question at once. Kent State asks admitted students to report a move, or a plan to practice in another state, to the Office of Student Services immediately, because some states' rules make practicum courses impossible. The new state brings a license question, an approved-state question and usually a new site; clinicals outside Ohio walks through it.

I live in Pennsylvania and work in Ohio. Which license do I need for Kent State practicum?
It depends on where the practicum sits. The catalog asks for an Ohio license for practica in Ohio and a home-state license for students who live and precept outside Ohio. Online program pages also expect practicum in your home state, so a Pennsylvania resident hoping for an Ohio site should settle the question with the concentration coordinator before the search begins.
Can I start Kent State courses while my new state license is pending?
Possibly, through conditional admission. The MSN Student Handbook says a student admitted without a license in the practicum state must show proof of that license before the first term. The catalog's general deadline is later, the end of the first semester unless practicum hours start sooner, but the handbook also asks for proof before registering, so treat the earliest date as yours unless your coordinator says otherwise.
Does Kent State verify my license, or do I send a copy?
Kent State checks it. The Office of Academic Advising and Student Services verifies licenses with state boards at admission and again at each renewal. The part that stays with you is reporting: the MSN Student Handbook makes you responsible for telling the college about any change in license status, such as a lapse or a restriction added by a board.
What happens to my practicum if I move to another state mid-program?
Report it to the Office of Student Services without delay, as Kent State's approved-states page and the MSN handbook require. Some states' rules make practicum courses impossible, and each program has its own list of states where Kent State can enroll students. Expect to need a license in the new state and a new site there before your hours can continue.
Do Kent State FNP students need an Ohio license for the campus sessions?
The catalog ties an Ohio license to on-campus courses, and the FNP, AGPCNP and AGACNP are mostly online concentrations with some campus attendance at the Kent Campus. Kent State publishes no separate note on how that applies to students licensed in another state who visit for short sessions, so raise it with Kent State's advising office in Henderson Hall before applying.
