Kent State practicum costs: who pays for what
Kent State's Clinical Compliance Policy is direct: students pay all compliance costs. Add the one-time Typhon fee, the College name badge, any screening an agency adds, and the travel and time an in-person practicum takes. This page sorts each cost by who pays and where the rule comes from. It leaves out amounts, which change; check current ones with the vendor, the GSN Canvas course or the agency.

Every practicum cost, sorted by who pays
Most practicum costs fall on you, one is carried by Kent State, and a few are set by the agency where you train. Knowing which is which tells you whom to ask when a new charge appears.

The compliance vendor and what it tracks
Compliance is the largest cost category, and the catalog assigns all of it to you. Your records are held by an outside tracking vendor, and under the Clinical Compliance Policy every related cost is yours. Kent State names Castlebranch as the BSN vendor; public graduate documents leave the graduate vendor unnamed, so think of it as the college's tracking vendor until your own onboarding materials name it.
Each item carries its own cost: an AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers card or Red Cross CPR/AED, federal and state background checks, proof of health insurance, immunizations and titers recorded on the Immunization and Physical Compliance Form signed by a licensed provider, and a physical exam within one year before you start at a site.
Some of these recur. A TB test is due every year and so is a flu shot; let either run out and your practicum hours stop counting until it is renewed. Budget for renewals every year, not only at admission. Our Clinical Compliance Policy page goes through each item.
Background checks and agency screening
Federal and state criminal background checks are part of the catalog policy, so their cost is yours. Kent State's BSN handbook describes them as BCI&I (Ohio) and FBI checks, with prints taken at a Fast Fingerprint site, and warns that some agencies require the checks again each year. Drug screens are missing from the catalog policy. They come from agencies instead: the BSN capstone syllabus notes that some agencies require drug screens, background checks or computer training, and that time spent on them does not count as clinical hours. Kent State's 2015 university template agreement expects students to take whatever background or drug test a facility asks for.
How an agency bills its own screening is set by that agency, so ask during onboarding. When we propose a site, we tell you up front which extra checks it asks for, so the cost and the time are in your plan before you commit.
Typhon, the badge and liability coverage
Typhon is billed once. Per the MSN Student Handbook, you settle it by card when you first open your account, and that one charge carries you through the program and five years past graduation. Our Typhon page covers the logging rules that come with it.
The College of Nursing name badge is ordered through the GSN Canvas course, which holds the current ordering details. It carries your name and concentration under the College of Nursing name, and it is for practicum days only.
Liability insurance is the one practicum cost Kent State carries for you. Kent State insures graduate students while they are enrolled in practicum courses, though the handbook warns the deductible is substantial. A personal student policy is optional under the handbook, so adding one is your decision rather than a Kent State requirement.
Onboarding, travel and time
Agency onboarding costs time more than money. The MSN handbook lists record-access training, HIPAA confidentiality, agency dress codes, covered tattoos and no artificial nails among the rules you follow at a site. Meeting your preceptor and finishing onboarding may happen before the semester begins, which is the best use of the weeks before classes.
Online programs keep coursework online, but practicum is in person. Kent State's online program pages place practicums in your home state, where your RN license is held, with a preceptor near you. Getting there is part of your own planning; for comparison, the catalog tells BSN community health students to arrange their own transportation.
Schedules carry a cost of their own. Each credit means 75 practicum hours, so a 2-credit course asks for 150, roughly 10 contact hours weekly, and Kent State's AGACNP rotation page wants 16 to 20 hours of clinical time weekly, on back-to-back days when the setting permits. If you work full time, plan for shift changes or leave.
What a delayed placement costs
The costs students underestimate are the ones a late placement creates. A lapsed compliance item stops hours at once. A student who declines or cannot receive vaccines has to notify student services at admission, and the catalog warns that some agencies may then refuse that student, which can delay graduation.
Time limits add pressure. After a stop-out, practicum courses and the lectures paired with them that have aged three years or more must be retaken, and master's students have six calendar years from admission to finish. A missing preceptor that pushes one practicum back a term can ripple through your plan in the Graduate Planning System (GPS), where delayed enrollment can close you out of required courses.

Check the renewal dates for your TB test and flu vaccine before every term. A mid-semester lapse means no hours count until the item is renewed.

Questions Kent State students ask
Is the Typhon fee charged every semester at Kent State?
No. The handbook calls it a one-time fee, charged to your card the day you first enter Typhon, and that single payment serves every practicum in your program, with access continuing after you graduate. If you are unsure which of Kent State's two Typhon databases to join, ask your practicum faculty before you pay.
Do I need my own malpractice insurance for a Kent State practicum?
It is optional. Kent State carries liability coverage for you in graduate practicum courses, with a large deductible per the MSN Student Handbook, and the liability insurance form sits in the GSN Canvas course. A personal student policy is your call. If an agency asks for proof of coverage, ask your practicum faculty what Kent State can provide.
Who pays for a drug screen an agency requires?
Kent State's catalog policy leaves drug screens out; agencies set them, and the university's template agreement puts completing them on the student. The catalog also assigns compliance costs to students in general. Ask the agency during onboarding how its screen is arranged, because the process differs from one site to the next.
Do RN-to-BSN students pay the same compliance costs?
Not always. Kent State's RN-to-BSN handbook says background checks and the immunization form are needed only when a site asks for them. RN-to-BSN students must carry their own health insurance and follow each agency's uniform policy, and the clinical component sits in NURS 43001. Our RN-to-BSN page covers the rest.
What does it cost if my preceptor drops out mid-semester?
Mostly time. A new preceptor still needs approval from practicum faculty and your coordinator, a new site may still lack an agreement with the College of Nursing, and every hour still has to be done before the semester's last day. Moving fast on a replacement is what keeps a dropped preceptor from turning into a delayed practicum.
