When a missing preceptor pushes your Kent State graduation back
A practicum that slips a term rarely costs just one term, because Kent State's graduate practicums run in sequence with paired lectures and a program plan built around them. Four rules decide how much room you have: the six-year limit, the three-year rule for practicum courses, the graduate leave policy and the requirement to enroll at least once every three terms. Know them before you decide to sit a term out.

How one missing preceptor becomes a later graduation
Kent State's practicums are built as chains. Most pair with a co-requisite lecture, and each one opens the way to the next: an FNP student moves from NURS 61292 through to NURS 63292, and the AGACNP certificate roadmap places its four practicums in four consecutive terms, summer included. When a preceptor falls through, the practicum and its lecture usually move together, and every later course slides behind them.
Your plan lives in the Graduate Planning System (GPS) in FlashLine, which the Office of Academic Advising and Student Services updates after a leave or a change of concentration. Kent State warns that delayed enrollment can close students out of required courses and delay graduation, so any change to a practicum term belongs in a conversation with your advisor as well as your faculty.
The six-year limit
Master's degrees and graduate certificates at Kent State must be complete within six calendar years of the latest admission term. Extensions of up to three terms need your advisor and the unit administrator; longer ones also need the dean, and a student who is refused becomes inactive. The College sends extension requests through the Office of Academic Advising and Student Services, with the Associate Dean of Academics approving anything over a year.
Part-time MSN students typically take three to four years, so the limit feels distant until a few delayed practicums stack up. The College's end-of-term review also issues a semester warning to students at risk of passing the limit, which means meeting an advisor and the coordinator before the next registration. The three-year rule for practicum courses
Apart from the degree clock, Kent State's Time Limit for Graduate Nursing Courses applies to students who stop out. A practicum and its paired lecture that are three or more years old must be taken again. The catalog lists the pairs, among them NURS 60120 with NURS 61292, NURS 60220 with NURS 62292, NURS 60325 with NURS 63292, NURS 60151 with NURS 61592 and NURS 66100 with NURS 66192. NURS 62592, the second PMHNP practicum, appears on the list by itself, without a paired lecture.
The rule bites hardest in the middle of a sequence. A student who completes the first primary care practicum and then waits several terms for the next preceptor can see early courses age out while later ones are still ahead. Keeping every practicum term filled is the simplest protection.
Leave of absence: a pause with conditions
Kent State's graduate leave policy, revised Fall 2026
- Open to active students with at least one completed term, for one to three consecutive terms plus one extension term.
- Requested before the term begins and never granted retroactively; University College decides within 10 working days.
- You drop all courses and are inactive while away, library access included.
- Coming back takes the Application for Graduate Re-Enrollment, and missing your return date counts as withdrawal.
- A denial can be appealed within 10 working days.
Leave time normally stops the degree clock, but the Fall 2026 revision adds an exception where accreditation requires it, naming certain nursing degrees. Kent State has not said which of its nursing programs that covers, so ask your advisor before assuming a leave protects your six years. The request form is in FlashLine.
Enroll at least once every three terms
Kent State treats fall, spring and summer as three terms a year. Graduate students must register for at least one graduate credit that counts toward the degree within every three consecutive terms, or hold an approved leave. After three terms with neither, the student is inactivated, has to reapply and pay a fee, and has no assurance of readmission.
For a student waiting on a preceptor, sitting out is riskier than it looks. Two empty terms followed by a third can end your active status even if you never meant to leave. Graduation dates to plan backward from
Every practicum has to end by the last day of its semester, so the term of your final practicum sets your earliest graduation. Working backward from a May 2027 finish, the final preceptor needs to be confirmed and onboarded before classes open on January 19, 2027, and graduate registration for that spring opens October 5, 2026. Each application window also closes before that term's classes end, so your graduation application goes in while the last hours are still ahead of you. What happens if I skip three terms waiting for a preceptor?
You are inactivated. Kent State requires graduate students to enroll in at least one credit toward the degree within every three consecutive terms or hold an approved leave. An inactive student has to reapply and pay a fee, and readmission is not automatic, so register or file for leave before the third term arrives.
Will I have to repeat a practicum I took years ago?
Possibly. Kent State's Time Limit for Graduate Nursing Courses requires students who stop out to repeat listed practicum and lecture pairs that are three or more years old. Check the catalog list against your own course dates, then confirm with your advisor how the rule applies to your plan.
Can I get more than six years to finish my MSN?
Extensions exist. University policy allows up to three added terms with approval from your advisor and the unit administrator, and anything longer also needs the dean. The College handles requests through the Office of Academic Advising and Student Services, and the MSN catalog page mentions a one-year extension.
Can a vaccine exemption delay my graduation?
It can. Kent State's catalog says students who cannot or will not be vaccinated must tell student services at admission, and that some agencies may then decline them, which can delay graduation. If that is your situation, mention it at the start of every preceptor search so the search centers on agencies that accept your status.
