Kent State nursing for Rhode Island residents
Rhode Island does not appear on any Kent State online nursing list, so the online MSN, DNP and RN-to-BSN programs are not enrolling from there today. Kent State's licensure table rates every licensure program MEETS for Rhode Island, and the state's nursing regulation sets no board sign-off for clinicals run by programs from other states. Its New England neighbors land very differently on Kent State's lists.

Kent State's Approved States for Online Learning page leaves Rhode Island off all seven program lists. Next door, Connecticut is on every one of them and Massachusetts on the RN-to-BSN list, a reminder that the page works state by state, and for online students the state that counts is the one you live in.

A MEETS entry is about licensure, not admission, and Kent State's program pages have yet to settle the out-of-state APRN question in their own text. The FNP, AGPCNP and AGACNP, each with some Kent Campus time, carry no published out-of-state eligibility at all, which makes the college's student services office in Henderson Hall the place to ask. What Rhode Island's board asks of out-of-state programs
Rhode Island's Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education regulates nursing, and its licensing pages sit with the Rhode Island Department of Health. The governing regulation, 216-RICR-40-05-3, is about approving Rhode Island's own basic nursing programs. A review of it turned up no provision making out-of-state programs obtain board approval before their students train in Rhode Island.
One feature is distinctive. The regulation ties Rhode Island's own programs to the state's central clinical placement registry: their agreements with clinical agencies must show that they take part in it. Whether the same applies to a program from another state, the text does not say. SARA, which Kent State joined in 2015, handles the distance-education side and does not bind Rhode Island's board. Full practice and a compact that returned in 2024
In AANP's ranking Rhode Island is a full practice state, where NPs need no physician agreement. For RN licensing, Rhode Island came back into the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 1, 2024 (NCSBN dates implementation to January 8), and licenses the board has issued to qualifying residents since then are multistate. A multistate license from another member state, Ohio included, is honored there. Rhode Island has not enacted the APRN Compact.
Kent State ties the practicum to an unrestricted license from your home state; its catalog and MSN handbook disagree about the deadline for proof, and RN license for practicum shows which date to plan around.
Health systems around Providence
Rhode Island's population and clinical capacity center on the Providence-Warwick metro, which counts about 1.1 million Rhode Island residents alongside its Massachusetts portion. The large systems here are South County Health, Care New England Health System, Brown University Health and CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island, and the Rhode Island Department of Health oversees public health. Each agency makes its own decision about hosting an out-of-state student, and Kent State counts hours only where the College of Nursing has an agreement in place.

Are Kent State's PMHNP and WHNP open to Rhode Island residents?
Not today. Rhode Island is missing from both lists, which cover 14 and 17 states respectively, even though Kent State's licensure table rates both programs MEETS for Rhode Island. Connecticut, next door, is on both. If you are planning a move or an application, confirm the current lists with the Office of Student Services, since the page carries no revision date.
Does Rhode Island require board approval for out-of-state nursing clinicals?
No such requirement turned up in 216-RICR-40-05-3, which governs approval of Rhode Island's own basic programs. The regulation does tie Rhode Island programs to the state's central clinical placement registry, without saying whether that reaches programs based elsewhere. Kent State's approved-states list is the bigger hurdle for Rhode Island residents.
Can Rhode Island nurses take Kent State's RN-to-BSN?
Not at present. The RN-to-BSN list covers 30 jurisdictions, Connecticut and Massachusetts among them, but Rhode Island is not one. Because the degree confers no new license, the licensure table leaves it out, and the approved-states page alone settles the question.
Does my Rhode Island license work in other compact states?
If it was issued to a qualifying Rhode Island resident on or after January 1, 2024, it is multistate under the Nurse Licensure Compact and carries practice privileges in the other member states. Rhode Island has not enacted the APRN Compact, so NP licensure there stays single-state.
