Studying with Kent State from Massachusetts
Kent State opens exactly one online nursing program to Massachusetts residents: the RN-to-BSN. The online MSN concentrations, their certificates and the post-MSN DNP all leave the state off, even though Kent State's licensure page marks every APRN row MEETS here. Clinical work happens in Massachusetts, where the Board of Registration in Nursing keeps a formal approval process for schools based elsewhere.

A MEETS result speaks to licensure after graduation, not enrollment. Kent State's APRN program pages still say out-of-state licensure awaits a determination, so get written confirmation for any row that matters before you apply. The FNP, AGPCNP and AGACNP need some Kent Campus time, and Kent State publishes nothing on who outside Ohio may take them; the Office of Student Services can tell you.
The Board's Part A and Part B approvals
Massachusetts spells out a clinical approval process for schools headquartered elsewhere. The rule, 244 CMR 6.03(2), applies when the parent institution's principal place of business lies outside the Commonwealth, and it reaches both classroom and clinical teaching delivered here. Two filings follow. Part A, approving the institution, goes in each year no less than six months ahead of the first placement. Part B, one per student placement, goes in 30 or more days before that placement opens, and the student waits for the Board's letter before starting.
Two details narrow its reach. The Board's criteria target programs preparing graduates for NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN licensure and never mention post-licensure or graduate study, so whether Kent State's RN-to-BSN falls under the rule is for Kent State's state authorization office to answer. When the process does apply, any change to a placement has to be settled two weeks before it starts and reported within seven days, and each preceptor may take two students at most. Board filings belong to the school. Your part is timing: name your Massachusetts site early so Kent State has room to act if the process applies.
Where Massachusetts nurses practice
Large employers range from Mass General Brigham and Beth Israel Lahey Health to Boston Medical Center, UMass Memorial Health and Baystate Health. The Boston-Cambridge-Newton metro holds roughly 4.6 million Massachusetts residents, with Worcester, Springfield and the state's slice of the Providence metro next. Treat these as a map of where nurses work; none has signed on to take Kent State students, and Kent State counts hours only at agencies holding a current agreement with its College of Nursing. The AANP rates Massachusetts full practice once a new NP completes a two-year supervised stretch.
Licensing while the compact waits
Licensing is in a waiting period. The compact became law in late 2024, but the Board counts it as inactive until implementation is done; conditional FBI approval for background checks came in May 2026, and the Board is aiming for May 2027. Meanwhile a multistate license issued by another compact state gives no right to practice in Massachusetts. Hold a Massachusetts RN license instead; Kent State expects the same of anyone living and training here. The APRN Compact is not enacted. Questions Kent State students ask
Can I take Kent State's online PMHNP while living in Massachusetts?
Not under the current approved-states page. Massachusetts is missing from the PMHNP list, and from the WHNP, AGCNS, Nurse Educator, NAHSL and DNP lists too. A MEETS licensure result does not change that. The PMHNP page describes the program if the list changes.
Does the Massachusetts Board have to approve my RN-to-BSN clinical placement?
The out-of-state approval process in Massachusetts was built for programs preparing students for the NCLEX; RN-to-BSN and graduate programs go unmentioned on the Board's page. Ask Kent State's state authorization office whether any filing applies to you. If one does, the Part B form for your placement is due at least 30 days before your first day.
Will a multistate license from New Hampshire or another compact state cover a Massachusetts practicum?
Not yet. The Board is aiming for May 2027 to switch the compact on, and until that happens multistate licenses from other states carry no practice privilege inside Massachusetts. A Massachusetts RN license is the safe plan for clinical work here, and it matches Kent State's rule for students who train outside Ohio.
I'm a Kent State MSN student moving to Massachusetts. What happens next?
Tell the Office of Student Services before you go; Kent State requires anyone admitted to its online programs to report a move at once. Since no graduate program lists Massachusetts, it is Kent State's call whether you keep going from there. If it agrees, your preceptor, site and RN license all move to Massachusetts, and a new site might first need an agreement with the College of Nursing.
