Kent State's online MSN, DNP and RN-to-BSN in New Jersey
All seven of Kent State's state-listed online nursing programs welcome New Jersey residents: the RN-to-BSN, the post-MSN DNP, and the MSN or certificate in PMHNP, WHNP, AGCNS, Nurse Educator or NAHSL. Every New Jersey licensure result reads MEETS. The planning happens locally, since New Jersey NPs prescribe under joint protocols with a physician and no Board rule on clinical placements by out-of-state schools has turned up.

Kent State's enrollment page and its licensure page both treat New Jersey well. The table reflects both as of September 24, 2026, and Kent State's approved states shows how New Jersey compares.

Two open questions remain. The FNP, AGPCNP and AGACNP, which bring students to the Kent Campus for part of the program, have no stated policy for New Jersey residents, so raise them with the Office of Student Services. And while the table says MEETS, Kent State's APRN program pages still describe licensure beyond Ohio as undecided; a written confirmation settles it. More on that tension: licensure disclosures.
Joint protocols and New Jersey preceptors
The AANP rates New Jersey reduced practice. An NP who orders drugs or devices there does so under joint protocols agreed with a collaborating physician. That matters most for PMHNP students, because Kent State requires a prescriber, either a psychiatric-mental health APRN or a psychiatrist, to precept practicum II, and a New Jersey NP prescriber works under those protocols. Practicum IV calls for a PMH APRN during half or more of the hours, and your own workplace is off the table for all four (PMHNP practicums).
WHNP students look for certified nurse-midwives, WHNPs, FNPs or general OB/GYNs in practices with strong gynecologic or obstetric volume. The biggest employers include RWJBarnabas Health and Hackensack Meridian Health, plus Atlantic Health System, Virtua Health and Camden's Cooper University Health Care. Use them as pointers to where clinicians work; none has a standing arrangement to take Kent State students, and a New Jersey site adds to your hour count only once the college has a signed affiliation agreement in place.
A state split between two big metros
The New York metro claims roughly 7.1 million New Jersey residents and the Philadelphia metro about 1.4 million more, with Trenton-Princeton and Atlantic City-Hammonton smaller. Kent State describes practicum for online students as happening in their home state, where they hold an RN license, so keep the search inside New Jersey even when a practice across the Hudson or the Delaware looks closer. Clear any cross-border idea with your coordinator before you ask.
Board rules and your New Jersey license
Nothing in New Jersey Board of Nursing rules has surfaced that makes a school from another state apply or give notice before its students train here. Subchapter 1 of N.J.A.C. 13:37 accredits programs run by institutions the state licenses, and its section on clinical agencies elsewhere, 1.10(c), looks outward at New Jersey schools placing students in other states. Guidance posted on the Board's own website was not available for review, so ask Kent State whether any New Jersey filing applies to your placement.
New Jersey's compact membership took effect November 15, 2021, and a resident's multistate license normally comes from New Jersey, the home-state credential Kent State's catalog calls for when practicum happens beyond Ohio (RN license for practicum). New Jersey has not signed on to the APRN Compact. SARA, joined by Kent State in 2015, authorizes the online program but leaves clinical oversight to the Board.

Is Kent State's online PMHNP available to New Jersey residents?
Yes. New Jersey sits on the 14-state list for the online PMHNP, MSN and certificate alike, and the NP disclosure gives New Jersey a MEETS. All four practicums take place in person in New Jersey. Is the Kent State WHNP open to New Jersey residents?
Yes. New Jersey is among the 17 states approved for the online WHNP and its certificate, and the licensure result is MEETS. Its four practicums move from gynecology through women's primary care and pregnancy to a specialty of your choosing, each done in person in New Jersey. Does New Jersey require Kent State to register before my clinicals start?
No rule requiring it was found. The state's nursing program rules speak to New Jersey-licensed schools, including when they send students elsewhere, and are silent on visiting schools like Kent State. The university does log out-of-state placements with NC-SARA, and your site must be under an affiliation agreement with Kent State before any hours count.
What happens if I move to New Jersey partway through my Kent State program?
Let the Office of Student Services know immediately; Kent State expects that of every admitted MSN, DNP and RN-to-BSN student who moves. New Jersey appears on all of Kent State's online lists, which helps, but the college still confirms whether you continue. After that, your preceptor, site and RN license all shift to New Jersey.
