Kent State's online nursing programs in Maine
Every Kent State approved-states list includes Maine, which means a Maine RN can study online in any of the seven listed programs, from the RN-to-BSN to the post-master's DNP, and do the practicum at home. Maine's Board rules say nothing about out-of-state programs placing students in Maine, which keeps the path simple; the real work is finding preceptors in a small, spread-out state.

One caution: Kent State's concentration pages still hold that licensure beyond Ohio is undecided, so a MEETS here is a starting point to verify with Kent State before you enroll. The hybrid NP tracks involve time on the Kent Campus. Our approved states guide compares the lists.
Maine's Board and out-of-state practicum
Maine's Board of Nursing has no rule or guidance, anywhere in its rules list or education pages, on schools from other states placing students at Maine sites. Chapter 7, its education rule, approves Maine's own prelicensure programs and stops there.
The Nurse Practice Act's student exemption reaches only people in board-approved programs that lead to a first license, which does not describe an RN in a Kent State MSN or DNP; you practice on your own license instead. If a Maine agency asks whether Kent State needs Board approval, bring the question to your practicum faculty. Kent State lists Maine for every online program, and the agency must also have a College of Nursing affiliation agreement on file.
Preceptors from Portland to Bangor
Maine counts as full practice in AANP's ratings, with a catch worth knowing when you approach an NP: a new NP spends at least two years supervised by a physician or NP, or employed where a physician serves as medical director, before practicing fully. Kent State, for its part, expects twelve months in the population focus and role before an NP or CNS precepts, so an NP in their first year falls short of Kent State's standard whatever Maine allows.
Portland-South Portland, about 578,000 people, is by far the largest metro, followed by Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn. Central Maine Healthcare, MaineGeneral, Northern Light and MaineHealth are the larger systems, named here as places NP students look rather than sites arranged for Kent State. Maine has no preceptor tax credit on record, so what you can offer is Kent State's PreceptED continuing education and its other preceptor perks.
Scheduling matters in a small market. At Kent State a credit of practicum equals 75 hours; the common 2-credit course means 150 hours, around 10 each week of the semester, so look for a preceptor with room for that steady load.
Your license for Maine practicum
Maine's compact participation dates to January 19, 2018. A Maine resident satisfies Kent State's license rule, unrestricted and from the state of residence and practicum, with a Maine license, single-state or multistate, and Ohio's own compact membership since 2023 makes no difference to that. Questions Kent State students ask
Can I complete Kent State's AGCNS from Maine?
Yes, Maine is one of the 14 AGCNS states. Your preceptor is a CNS in acute or ambulatory care; if that CNS spends under about half their time in direct care, you add a CNS, NP or physician in direct care for half or more of the hours. Later practica call for a CNS working across all three spheres on a quality or evidence-based project, and Kent State advises planning on two or more agencies.
Does Maine require Kent State to get approval before my clinicals?
No Maine rule on it turns up in the Board's published rules or education pages; its education rule covers Maine's own prelicensure programs only. Kent State lists Maine for all seven online programs, and hours count only once the agency has a College of Nursing agreement in place.
Can a Maine RN finish a bachelor's with Kent State?
Yes. The RN-to-BSN enrolls from Maine, and its clinical-lab component in NURS 43001 Health Promotion is done under your Maine license, close to home. Kent State has not published who arranges RN-to-BSN sites, so ask early; our RN-to-BSN guide describes the other courses.
Can a newly licensed Maine NP be my preceptor?
Usually not yet. Kent State's rotation pages ask that preceptors have practiced for a year in their population focus and role. Maine also keeps new NPs under supervision or a physician-directed employer for their first 24 months, which shapes the setting even once they pass Kent State's one-year mark.
