Kent State practicum time limits: six years, three years and three terms
Three clocks run on every Kent State graduate nursing plan. The MSN or certificate must be finished within six calendar years, a practicum and its paired lecture must be repeated after a stop-out once they are three or more years old, and three terms without enrollment make you inactive. Knowing all three keeps a pause from turning into a restart.

Three clocks on a graduate nursing plan
Each clock has its own source and its own consequence, and a long pause can trip more than one at once.

Summer counts as a term in these policies, since Kent State treats fall, spring and the 13-week summer as three terms a year. The six-year limit for the MSN and certificates
The university's time-limits policy gives master's and graduate certificate students six calendar years from the latest admission term. The MSN catalog page repeats the six-year maximum and mentions a possible one-year extension. Inside the College, being at risk of passing the limit triggers a Semester Warning, which means a meeting with an advisor and your concentration coordinator before your next registration.
Extensions follow two published routes. University policy lets the advisor and unit administrator approve up to three terms, with the dean also signing anything longer, and a denied student becomes inactive. Under the MSN handbook, the College's advising and student services office receives the request, and anything longer than a year needs the Associate Dean of Academics, while the MSN catalog page mentions one-year petitions to the concentration director. The form is the Application for Extension of Time Limits.
Most part-time MSN students finish in three to four years, which leaves room. The limit starts to bite when a missing preceptor pushes practicums back term after term, the situation covered on delayed graduation.
The three-year rule for practicum courses
The catalog's Time Limit for Graduate Nursing Courses is narrower and sharper. After a stop-out, any practicum on the College's list, together with the lecture paired with it, has to be taken again once the pair has reached three years of age, so that clinical skills are current when the next practicum begins.

The Nurse Educator, NAHSL and DNP practicums are not on the published list. Kent State does not explain how the three years are counted, so have your advisor check your own dates before you plan a return.
Stopping out: a leave of absence or an inactive record
How you step away matters as much as how long. Under the Leave of Absence for Graduate Students policy, revised for Fall 2026, an active student who has finished at least one term may step away for up to three terms in a row, and one further term can be added as an extension. You file the Request for Graduate Leave of Absence in FlashLine ahead of the term, never after it has started. University College has 10 working days to rule, and you have the same span to appeal a refusal.
While away you hold no courses, your status is inactive and library access pauses. To come back you file the Application for Graduate Re-Enrollment; fail to return on schedule and Kent State treats it as a withdrawal. As a rule, leave terms do not count against the six years. The Fall 2026 revision carves out cases where an accreditor requires otherwise and mentions nursing degrees in that context without naming them, so confirm with your advisor whether your clock pauses.
Stopping without a leave carries more risk. Three consecutive terms with no degree credit and no approved leave make you inactive, and getting back in means a new application and a fee, with no promise of readmission.
Repeatable practicums
The catalog flags several practicums as repeatable for credit: NURS 61092, NURS 61392 and NURS 62392 in the AGACNP sequence, NURS 61692 in the FNP, NURS 60592 in Nurse Educator, and the DNP-level NURS 70592, NURS 74292 and NURS 74692. A repeatable course may appear on your record more than once for credit.
The label changes the repeat arithmetic as well. It takes a course outside the university's two-attempt cap for graduate courses, and every grade earned in it stays in your GPA. Planning a return after time away
- Check the clocks first.Ask your advisor in Academic Advising and Student Services where you stand on the six-year limit and whether any practicum on your record is near the three-year mark.
- Update your GPS plan.The office revises your Graduate Planning System plan after a leave. Look it over before you register, since a late registration can lock you out of courses you need.
- Renew compliance.Annual items such as the TB test and flu vaccine lapse while you are away, and the physical must fall within a year of starting at a site. See the compliance policy page.

- Rebuild the placement.A former preceptor may have moved on, and agreements with sites run for set terms. Start the search about two terms before your return practicum.

How long do I have to finish the Kent State MSN?
Six calendar years from your latest admission term, the same limit that applies to graduate certificates. Extensions are possible: up to three terms with the advisor and unit administrator, longer with the dean as well. Within the College, requests go through the advising and student services office on the Application for Extension of Time Limits.
Do I have to retake a practicum I took four years ago?
If you stopped out and the course is on the College's list, yes. The catalog requires students returning from a stop-out to retake listed practicum-and-lecture pairs aged three years or more, such as NURS 60120 with NURS 61292. Your advisor can confirm how your dates are counted.
What happens if I skip a semester at Kent State?
One skipped term does not make you inactive by itself. The continuous-enrollment rule asks for at least 1 degree credit within every three consecutive terms, summer included, unless you hold an approved leave. A skipped term still uses up time on your six-year clock and can push a practicum later, so update your GPS plan with your advisor.
Does taking a leave pause Kent State's six-year limit?
In most cases, yes: terms on an approved leave sit outside the degree time limit. The leave policy's Fall 2026 revision, however, allows an exception where accreditation demands it and points to some nursing degrees without listing them. Before you file, ask your advisor whether your program is one of them.
Do BSN clinical courses expire too?
Yes, on a shorter clock. Kent State's catalog says BSN lab and clinical courses more than one year old, including NURS 20030, NURS 30035 and the NURS 40045 capstone, can require a repeat when you return from a stop-out. The BSN clinicals page explains how those courses are scheduled.
