Kansas nurses at Kent State: education, leadership and the RN-to-BSN
From Kansas, three Kent State online nursing programs are open: the RN-to-BSN, the Nurse Educator MSN and the leadership MSN known as NAHSL, plus the two MSN certificates. Kent State leaves Kansas off its lists for the online PMHNP, WHNP, AGCNS and post-master's DNP.

The three open programs are the ones that lead to no new license. Would-be APRNs meet a split picture: the disclosure says Kent State's NP and CNS programs meet Kansas requirements, yet the online APRN programs do not enroll from Kansas and the hybrid NP tracks have no published out-of-state answer. Educator and leadership practicums in Kansas
Both MSN practicums happen in person in Kansas. For the Nurse Educator, NURS 67092 is set in your clinical specialty, while NURS 60592 pairs you with a seasoned educator in academic nursing or a hospital's staff-development team. The program page says 300 hours, half in each course; an older rotation page says 180, and your syllabus and coordinator have the final word.
NAHSL moves from NURS 64292 to NURS 64392 with the NURS 64302 seminar alongside, and its 300 hours are spent among administrators, managers and executives. Kent State prefers a master's-prepared leader a rung or two above your present job, urges you to try settings outside your own unit or employer, and builds a site project into the work.
Roughly 938,000 Kansans live in the Kansas City metro, and Wichita, Topeka and Manhattan are the other sizable markets. Wesley Healthcare in Wichita, Ascension Via Christi, Stormont Vail and the University of Kansas Health System are the big employers; they show where Kansas students look, not sites arranged for Kent State.
What KSBN expects of out-of-state programs
KSBN, the Kansas Board of Nursing, publishes a sheet for out-of-state APRN programs: no formal Board approval is needed before Kansas residents enroll in an online APRN program based elsewhere, because KSBN reviews the program at the point a graduate seeks Kansas APRN licensure. The Board's documents describe no clinical-placement approval step for outside RN-to-BSN programs either.
For APRN clinicals in Kansas, KSBN wants the preceptor oriented, signed to an agreement and licensed as a Kansas APRN in the student's role, and supervising an APRN student requires that license. The student works on an RN license Kansas recognizes.
At the licensure stage KSBN checks role-specialty clinical hours: at least 500 if you were admitted before March 1, 2025, and 750 if admitted after. Kent State's NP concentrations add up to 525 to 675 hours by course sum (the FNP's 675 sits above the catalog's 300-600 rule), so anyone aiming for a Kansas APRN license should ask Kent State how its programs line up with that check.
Licensing for practicum in Kansas
Kansas began recognizing Nurse Licensure Compact licenses on July 1, 2019, and Ohio joined in 2023. KSBN's wording, an RN license recognized by Kansas, takes in either Kansas's own single-state license or a multistate license. Under Kent State's rule, the license comes from wherever you live and do practicum, which here means Kansas. AANP rates Kansas full practice, and the APRN Compact has no Kansas enactment. RN-to-BSN students in Kansas
The RN-to-BSN list's 30 jurisdictions include Kansas. Clinical-lab hours in that program sit in a single course, NURS 43001 Health Promotion, at three contact hours weekly, and NURS 47099, the capstone, is a scholarly project. Kent State leaves unpublished both a total hour count and who arranges RN-to-BSN sites, and background checks or immunization forms are needed only if a site asks. Questions Kent State students ask
Can I study Kent State's online PMHNP from Kansas?
Not under the current lists. Kansas does not appear among the PMHNP's 14 states, nor on the WHNP, AGCNS or post-master's DNP lists. Your Kansas options are the educator, leadership and RN-to-BSN programs, while the hybrid NP tracks have no published Kansas answer.
Does KSBN have to approve Kent State before my Nurse Educator practicum?
KSBN's published material covers APRN programs, saying no Board approval is needed before enrollment, and it describes no approval step for undergraduate clinicals. It says nothing about educator or leadership practicums. Kent State lists Kansas for both, and hours still count only at an agency the College of Nursing has an agreement with.
What kind of leader can precept my NAHSL practicum in Kansas?
Kent State's general standard covers healthcare administrators with an active, unrestricted license or certification, at least a year of experience and employer approval. For NAHSL it prefers a master's-prepared leader, ideally with an MSN, one or two levels above your role.
Is my Ohio compact license valid for a Kansas practicum?
Kansas and Ohio are both compact states, and KSBN accepts a multistate license as one Kansas recognizes. Kent State's advising office confirms which license it records for you, under its rule tying the license to your Kansas residence and practicum.
