Maryland and Kent State: the RN-to-BSN is the open door
Maryland is on Kent State's list for one online nursing program, the RN-to-BSN. The MSN concentrations, post-master's certificates and DNP all leave Maryland off, so a Maryland RN can finish a bachelor's with Kent State from home but cannot begin its graduate nursing programs from there under the current lists.

Those MEETS rows speak to licensure after graduation, not to enrolling now, and the concentration pages still call out-of-Ohio licensure unsettled, so Kent State should confirm them for you. The RN-to-BSN from a Maryland address
Kent State's online RN-to-BSN requires your RN license, active and unrestricted, to come from the state where your practica happen, so a Maryland resident works on a Maryland license, single-state or multistate. Maryland's regulations also let a nurse holding a compact privilege practice there under Maryland law.
The hands-on piece is the clinical laboratory in NURS 43001 Health Promotion, and the degree wraps up with a scholarly project in NURS 47099. Sites may ask for background checks or the immunization form, which Kent State then requires, and their uniform rules apply to you. Who arranges the practicum setting, and how many hours it totals, are not in Kent State's public materials, so raise both with the program early. Our RN-to-BSN guide walks through the courses.
Maryland normally has out-of-state schools register with its Higher Education Commission before they enroll Marylanders online, but online programs from SARA-approved institutions are exempt, and Kent State joined SARA in 2015. SARA stops short of nursing boards, and no Maryland Board of Nursing requirement for outside programs to get clinical-placement approval appears in the Board's published pages.
Graduate study and a Maryland APRN future
Two Maryland facts matter to anyone planning an NP career through Kent State, like a graduate who later settles there. The Maryland Board of Nursing reviews and approves each NP program before it will certify that program's graduates for advanced practice, and when a program is missing from its approved list, the school, not the graduate, files the Program Approval Form. A Maryland statute also lets a student in an accredited graduate APRN program practice at the APRN level within that program without holding an APRN license.
AANP rates Maryland full practice, with a condition: a new NP declares an 18-month mentorship with a physician or certified NP. Kent State's disclosure places Maryland under MEETS for its NP and CNS programs, so the practical questions are whether Kent State is on the Board's approved list and whether Kent State confirms the disclosure for your program.
Maryland's preceptor tax credit and health systems
Maryland's Nurse Practitioner Preceptorship Tax Credit rewards NPs and physicians who teach NP students unpaid within a preceptorship the Board has approved. The bar is three or more rotations, each at least 90 hours of community-based training, in places the state health department names as short of health care workers, and the credit is written around NP students in nursing programs the State Board recognizes. The statute runs to June 30, 2030. It has no bearing on an RN-to-BSN practicum.
Johns Hopkins Medicine, Luminis Health, MedStar Health, LifeBridge Health and the University of Maryland Medical System are the state's major systems, and its main metros are Baltimore-Columbia-Towson, Maryland's share of the Washington region, Lexington Park and Hagerstown. Can a Maryland nurse do Kent State's online MSN?
Not under the current lists. Maryland appears only on the RN-to-BSN list, and none of the online MSN concentrations, certificates or the post-master's DNP includes it. For the partly on-campus NP tracks, Kent State has posted no out-of-state rule, so check with the Office of Student Services ahead of applying.
Does Maryland require Kent State to register before I enroll in the RN-to-BSN?
Maryland's higher education rule has out-of-state schools register before enrolling Marylanders online, except for online programs from SARA-approved institutions. Kent State joined SARA in 2015 through the Ohio Department of Higher Education, and it lists Maryland as approved for the RN-to-BSN.
Would a Kent State NP degree be accepted for Maryland certification?
The Maryland Board reviews each NP program before certifying its graduates, and if a program is not on its approved list, the school submits the Program Approval Form. Kent State's disclosure lists Maryland as MEETS for its NP concentrations; confirm with Kent State and check the Board's list before you rely on it.
What if I move to Maryland in the middle of a Kent State MSN?
Let the Office of Student Services know right away; that is a standing Kent State rule for students in its online nursing programs. Because no online MSN concentration lists Maryland, that office decides whether you can continue. Keep your practicum plans on hold until you have its answer in writing.
