Louisiana's approval rule and Kent State's online nursing programs
Kent State lists no online nursing program for Louisiana, and Louisiana sets one of the heaviest bars for any school based elsewhere: its Board of Nursing must approve the program before it teaches a course or places a student in the state, with the request due at least six months ahead. Kent State notes that some states' laws keep it from offering clinical practicum courses, without saying which laws shaped each list. The MEETS entries concern licensure for graduates, and the concentration pages say the out-of-Ohio licensure call is still pending, so confirm them with Kent State. What LAC 46:XLVII.3539 asks of schools based elsewhere
Louisiana's rule covers undergraduate and graduate programs alike when their administrative control sits in another state. Before such a program runs a course or clinical experience in Louisiana, the Louisiana State Board of Nursing must approve it, and the file is heavy.
- Half a year aheadThe school writes to the Board naming each clinical agency and unit, and attaches its curriculum, syllabi and catalog, survey and qualification forms for its facilities and instructors, and NCLEX and certification pass rates.
- Credentials in orderIt shows home-state approval, regional accreditation, and national nursing accreditation of a kind the Board accepts.
- Instructors licensed in LouisianaInstructors in the state hold a Louisiana RN or APRN license, a nursing master's or doctorate, and two-plus years of clinical work.
- Each student reportedA graduate student's placement goes on a Board spreadsheet no later than two weeks into the experience; undergraduates are submitted 60 days before their clinical course.
- Supervision floorFaculty check in with preceptor and student every week, go to the site once or more per term, and cap APRN students at nine per instructor on any clinical day.
Approval lasts up to three years and renews by petition. Every step belongs to the school, so a Louisiana practicum hinges on a Kent State decision, not on a preceptor's willingness.
Practice, preceptors and systems in Louisiana
In AANP's terms Louisiana is a reduced practice state: each NP maintains a regulated physician collaboration for some portion of their practice, and an NP preceptor teaches inside it. No Louisiana preceptor tax credit is on record.
New Orleans-Metairie and Baton Rouge are the two biggest metros, at roughly 970,000 and 890,000 people, with Lafayette and Shreveport-Bossier City next. Ochsner, Baton Rouge General, LCMC, FMOL Health and Willis-Knighton are the major systems. Licensing for Louisiana clinical hours
Louisiana's compact membership began July 1, 2019, and Ohio's in 2023. A Louisiana resident would train on a Louisiana-issued license, single-state or multistate, which is what Kent State's home-state license rule points to; Kent State's advising office has the final word on which one it logs. The APRN Compact has no Louisiana enactment, and the Board's faculty licensing rule would reach any Kent State instructor teaching in Louisiana. Can a Louisiana nurse enroll in Kent State's online RN-to-BSN?
Not under the current list. The RN-to-BSN's 30 approved jurisdictions leave out Louisiana, even though neighboring Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi are on it. Because RN-to-BSN admission hinges on a license from your practicum state, the program follows where you live, and a Louisiana address rules it out for now.
Does Louisiana's Board need to approve Kent State for my clinicals?
Under Louisiana's rule, any nursing program administered from another state needs Board approval before it offers a course or clinical experience in Louisiana, with the request due six months before the start. That filing would be Kent State's to make, and Kent State currently lists no online nursing program for Louisiana.
How closely would Kent State faculty have to supervise a Louisiana practicum?
Louisiana's rule sets the floor: weekly contact among faculty, preceptor and student, a site visit every semester or quarter, and no more than nine APRN students per instructor per clinical day. Kent State publishes nothing on graduate site visits of its own, so Louisiana's standard is the one to plan around.
Does Kent State's disclosure say its NP programs meet Louisiana requirements?
Yes on paper: the program listing shows MEETS for Louisiana across the NP, CNS and certificate rows. The concentration pages still hedge on out-of-state licensure, though, so get Kent State's confirmation before relying on a Louisiana APRN license after graduation.
