Kent State's nursing programs and California
For California nurses, Kent State offers one online route: the RN-to-BSN. Kent State's program listing gives California a DOES NOT MEET result for every licensure program, from the MSN NP concentrations to the pre-licensure BSN, although a second Kent State page says the APRN certificates meet California's requirements. If a California NP license is your goal, settle that contradiction with Kent State before you enroll anywhere.

Two Kent State answers on the certificates
Kent State Online publishes its disclosures twice. The program listing puts California in the DOES NOT MEET column for the NP and AGCNS post-master's certificates. The state-by-state licensure page, by contrast, lists the APRN certificates as meeting California's requirements. Both are live; both cannot be right.
A third wrinkle comes from the APRN program pages, which still say the college has yet to reach a determination on licensure outside Ohio. Send the Office of Student Services a written question naming the certificate and California, and save the answer. Licensure disclosures lays out every row.
The RN-to-BSN on a California license
No compact reaches California: it has never entered the Nurse Licensure Compact, no bill to enter is pending, and it has passed no APRN Compact law, so a multistate license carries no weight here. Kent State admits RN-to-BSN students licensed in the state where their practica happen, so a California resident studies on a California RN license issued by the Board of Registered Nursing.
Hands-on work comes in two courses, the NURS 43001 health promotion course and the capstone, NURS 47099. California's Business and Professions Code section 2729 allows students to give nursing care incidental to study only in narrow cases, one more reason to keep that California license active. Why California is demanding ground for outside NP programs
Section 1486 of Title 16 of the California Code of Regulations sets the terms for NP programs based elsewhere. Every clinical hour in California requires the student to hold a current California RN license. Preceptors must be California-licensed in their own discipline and qualified for the student's NP category; the program orients them, faculty re-evaluate them no less than once every two years, and a signed three-way agreement among agency, preceptor and program sets out what the preceptor does. California NP certification itself comes only after a California RN license.
AANP classes California as restricted practice, with standardized protocols required for select settings and procedures. Kent State's state-authorization page adds that California is not a SARA state, though it leaves out-of-state public universities unregulated; see clinicals outside Ohio.
Where California nurses look for sites
Four metros hold most of the state: greater Los Angeles at nearly 13 million, the Inland Empire around Riverside and San Bernardino, the Bay Area and San Diego. Searches usually begin with the big systems: Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente with its two California regions, Sutter Health across Northern and Central California, the six University of California health systems from Davis to San Diego, Stanford Health Care, and Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles. None is committed to Kent State students.

Can I become a California NP through Kent State's online MSN?
Kent State's program listing says its MSN NP concentrations do not meet California's educational requirements, and the approved-states page does not list California for the online PMHNP or WHNP. The hybrid FNP, AGPCNP and AGACNP are not on that page at all. If a California NP license is the plan, ask Kent State directly before building it around these programs.
Why does Kent State list California for the RN-to-BSN but not its MSN programs?
Kent State does not explain individual states. The only reason it gives is general: some states' laws can rule out offering clinical practicum courses there. The RN-to-BSN adds a degree, not a license, keeping it clear of the licensure results shaping the NP and CNS programs.
Is a Kent State pre-licensure BSN recognized for California licensure?
The program listing marks the BSN as DOES NOT MEET for California, as it does for Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania. That BSN is taught in person on Kent State's Ohio campuses, so this matters to Ohio students who plan to move west after graduating. Ask the Office of Student Services what that result means for your plans.
What if I move to California during a Kent State MSN?
Give the Office of Student Services notice ahead of the relocation, which Kent State expects from any admitted online student changing states. With California off every graduate list and its NP rules as strict as they are, whether you can continue is a question only Kent State can answer.
