Texas nurses in Kent State's online programs
Kent State accepts Texas residents into three online nursing programs: the Women's Health NP and the Nurse Educator MSN (each also offered as a post-master's certificate), plus the RN-to-BSN. Missing for Texas are the PMHNP, AGCNS, NAHSL and post-MSN DNP. Practicum happens in person in Texas, where the Board of Nursing's approval process for outside schools stops at pre-licensure programs.

Three programs open to Texas, four closed
Texas holds an odd spot on Kent State's approved-states page: the Nurse Educator and NAHSL lists match state for state except Texas, which is in for Nurse Educator and out for NAHSL. The licensure page marks every APRN program MEETS for Texas.

The WHNP's MEETS deserves a check: Kent State's APRN program pages still state that the college has not decided on licensure outside Ohio, so check it with Kent State ahead of enrollment. Some Kent Campus time is built into the FNP, AGPCNP and AGACNP, and whether Texans can join them is unpublished; ask the Office of Student Services. What the Texas Board of Nursing reviews
Texas requires Board approval before an out-of-state school runs clinical learning in the state, but the rules behind it (Board rules 214.3 and 215.3 and an education guideline revised in May 2026) cover only vocational, diploma, associate, BSN and entry-level master's programs. RN-to-BSN completion and graduate or APRN education fall outside them, and every Kent State program open to Texans falls in those groups.
The Board's APRN education standards, in Chapter 219, let a licensed APRN or another licensed clinician who can teach serve as preceptor and expect a signed agreement linking school, preceptor and agency. That chapter is aimed at APRN programs asking Texas for approval; nationally accredited programs are not part of that approval, and Kent State's master's programs hold CCNE accreditation.
Women's health practicum under Texas delegation
AANP classes Texas as restricted. Texas NPs work by physician delegation and under supervision, sign physician protocols that last for their whole careers, and may prescribe Schedule II drugs only in certain settings. Kent State's WHNP rotations call for a certified nurse-midwife, a WHNP, an FNP or a general OB/GYN where gynecologic or obstetric volume is strong, and the women's primary care practicum can use an FNP, adult NP or family practice physician.
Dallas-Fort Worth holds about 8.5 million people and Houston about 7.9 million, with San Antonio and Austin each above 2.6 million. Big employers include Baylor Scott & White Health, Texas Health Resources, Houston Methodist, UT Southwestern Medical Center and San Antonio's University Health, named as landmarks only. The WHNP adds up to 600 practicum hours over four courses, as the WHNP program page explains.
Educator-role practicums in Texas settings
The Nurse Educator MSN has two practicums: NURS 67092 in your clinical specialty, then NURS 60592 in the educator role, 300 hours split evenly. The educator-role course needs an experienced nurse educator in an academic or staff-development setting, and Kent State asks students to start planning it with faculty in mid-February of the prior semester.
Placed inside a Texas pre-licensure program, you would see Texas preceptor rules at work: a clinical preceptor there is an RN licensed in Texas or holding the privilege to practice, and may oversee two students at most. Texas also offers public-college tuition relief to RNs who precept pre-licensure undergraduates, a benefit that stops short of graduate preceptors. The Nurse Educator page covers the concentration.

Is Kent State's online PMHNP open to Texas residents?
Not under the current list. The PMHNP enrolls from 14 states and Texas is not one, despite a MEETS for Texas on the licensure page. The WHNP is the one NP concentration on Kent State's Texas list. A current student moving to Texas should contact the Office of Student Services first.
Does the Texas BON have to approve Kent State before my WHNP clinicals?
The Board's process for outside schools, with its four-month application lead time and public list of approved programs, is built for pre-licensure education. Its guideline says post-licensure RN-to-BSN and graduate or APRN programs are not covered. Kent State's state authorization office can confirm how your Texas placement is handled.
Why is NAHSL closed to Texas when Nurse Educator is open?
Kent State gives no state-by-state reasons. Its approved-states page warns that some state laws make clinical practicum courses impossible to offer, and the NAHSL list simply leaves out Texas while mirroring the Nurse Educator list elsewhere. Ask the Office of Student Services whether that may change.
What does the RN-to-BSN ask of a Texas nurse?
An active, unrestricted RN license for Texas, where your practica take place. The program runs fully online, its clinical piece sits in the NURS 43001 Health Promotion course, and background checks or immunization forms come up only when a site requests them.
