Kent State online nursing from New Mexico: where things stand
Kent State's online nursing programs do not currently enroll from New Mexico: the state is missing from all seven program lists, RN-to-BSN included. The twist is that Kent State's licensure table rates each of its licensure programs MEETS for New Mexico. Enrollment, not licensure, is the blocker, and a student who relocates there also faces a board rule on longer clinicals.

Enrollment says no, licensure says meets
Two Kent State pages answer two different questions. The approved-states page sets where each online program enrolls, and New Mexico is on none of its lists. The licensure page judges fit with a state's license rules, and New Mexico comes out MEETS wherever it is rated.

A MEETS rating does not open enrollment. Kent State has said nothing public about whether the FNP, AGPCNP or AGACNP take out-of-state students, and its program pages still describe APRN licensure elsewhere as awaiting a determination, so ask the Office of Student Services. New Mexico's rule for clinicals longer than a semester
Clinical placement in New Mexico is regulated by the New Mexico Board of Nursing. Its education rules, Part 16.12.3 NMAC, say a program running clinical or field experiences in the state for longer than a semester must seek the board's approval for those placements, and a program approved elsewhere must still clear New Mexico's minimum standards.
The part is framed around programs preparing nurses for New Mexico licensure and never names RN-to-BSN or NP programs, so whether it reaches a particular Kent State course is an open question. Its trigger is duration: a multi-term NP practicum sequence would cross it if the part applies, which is why Kent State should weigh in before any New Mexico placement is planned. Kent State's SARA membership, dating to 2015, handles online coursework, not board rules like this one.
Who can precept under New Mexico's definition
New Mexico's rules also define who counts as a clinical preceptor: a nurse licensed at or above the student's target level, with at least two years of experience, whom the nursing program may not pay incentives for an assigned student. Kent State asks for a year of experience in the student's population focus and role, so where New Mexico's definition applies, it sets the taller requirement.
AANP counts New Mexico among its full practice states, so NPs there need no physician agreement to practice. The major systems are Presbyterian Healthcare Services, Lovelace Health System, Santa Fe's CHRISTUS St. Vincent and UNM Health System, whose hospital is New Mexico's only academic medical center. About 925,000 people live in the Albuquerque metro; Las Cruces, Santa Fe and Farmington are much smaller. Hosting decisions rest with each agency.
A compact state with a new multistate fee
Since January 19, 2018, New Mexico has belonged to the Nurse Licensure Compact, so an RN holding a multistate license from Ohio or another member state may practice there. The board issues multistate licenses of its own and, as of June 1, 2026, charges an added fee for them. The APRN Compact has not been enacted in New Mexico; it needs seven enacting states to take effect, and five have signed on.

Relocating, and why students bring us in
Kent State's rule for enrolled students is blunt: anyone in the RN-to-BSN, MSN or DNP who plans to relocate or practice elsewhere reports it to the Office of Student Services straight away. Kent State warns that some state laws rule out practicum courses entirely, and New Mexico is on none of its lists, so make that call before accepting a job there. Can a New Mexico resident apply to Kent State's online FNP?
Kent State has not said whether its mostly online FNP, AGPCNP or AGACNP take out-of-state students; they include some Kent Campus attendance and are absent from the approved-states page. The MEETS rating for New Mexico answers a different question. Ask the Office of Student Services before you apply.
Is Kent State's RN-to-BSN open to New Mexico nurses?
Not at present. The RN-to-BSN has Kent State's longest list, 30 jurisdictions, and it includes Arizona and Texas, but not New Mexico. Since the degree adds no license, the licensure table ignores it, and the approved-states page is the only answer that counts.
Does New Mexico's more-than-one-semester rule cover a single practicum course?
The rule's trigger is clinical experience in New Mexico that runs longer than one semester, so a single one-semester course falls below it on the rule's own wording. Whether Part 16.12.3 reaches Kent State's graduate or RN-to-BSN courses at all is not settled in its text; Kent State and the board can confirm.
Does New Mexico offer preceptors a tax credit or stipend?
No preceptor tax credit or incentive program for New Mexico turned up in our research. The board's education rule leans the other way for nurse preceptors, barring the nursing program from paying them incentives for an assigned student.
