Kent State's online WHNP for Minnesota nurses
Minnesota shows up on exactly one of Kent State's online nursing lists: the Women's Health NP, taken as an MSN or a post-master's certificate. Minnesota is absent from the rest: PMHNP, AGCNS, Nurse Educator, NAHSL, the DNP and, perhaps surprisingly, the RN-to-BSN. WHNP students train in person in Minnesota, and because Minnesota is not a compact member, that means holding a Minnesota RN license.

The RN-to-BSN gap stands out, since that program's list is Kent State's longest. The mostly online NP tracks mix in some Kent Campus attendance and have no stated policy for students outside Ohio, a question for the Office of Student Services. Kent State's WHNP pages also still say the college has not settled out-of-state licensure, so get the MEETS result confirmed before you enroll.
Three rulebooks for one Minnesota practicum
State law is the loosest layer. Minnesota Statutes 148.271(6) lets a nurse licensed in another state practice here as part of coursework toward an advanced degree. Minnesota Rules 6305.0300 go further, treating any U.S. program its own state approves as an approved program, on the condition that the supervising instructor is Minnesota-licensed and currently registered. No separate Board of Nursing approval step for schools based outside Minnesota has been found.
Kent State's rule is tighter. Its catalog ties your license to your home state whenever practicum happens outside Ohio, so a Minnesotan needs a Minnesota license, unrestricted (RN license for practicum). Some employers set the bar higher again. Mayo Clinic's program for NP students expects your school to sign an affiliation agreement with Mayo, expects you to carry a currently registered Minnesota license and clear a Minnesota human services background study, and expects your faculty of record to hold a license in your training state.
The statutory student exemption does not override Kent State's license rule. Have your Minnesota RN license in hand before the first WHNP practicum.
WHNP preceptors across Minnesota
The WHNP runs four practicums, NURS 66192 through NURS 66492: gynecology, women's primary care, care in pregnancy and a specialty block you choose, 600 hours in total by Kent State's certificate page. Certified nurse-midwives, WHNPs, FNPs and general OB/GYNs can precept where gynecologic or obstetric volume is steady. Course by course detail is on WHNP practicums.
Mayo Clinic and M Health Fairview rank among the state's major systems, alongside Allina Health, HealthPartners and Essentia Health. The Twin Cities metro is home to roughly 3.6 million people on the Minnesota side, and Duluth, Rochester and St. Cloud trail far behind. Those names mark where clinicians practice; none is a confirmed Kent State site, and hours start counting once the agency and Kent State's College of Nursing have signed an affiliation agreement. The AANP counts Minnesota as full practice once a new NP has logged 2,080 hours working in collaboration with a physician or APRN partner.
MERC funding and why it skips you
Minnesota's Medical Education and Research Costs fund (MERC), run by the Department of Health, partly reimburses clinical training sites for accredited training, APRN students included. It never pays preceptors directly. Eligibility demands that the school and the site both sit inside Minnesota, so a Kent State student's hours add nothing to a host site's MERC count. Knowing that helps when a practice manager asks what taking you on involves.

Can I do Kent State's RN-to-BSN online from Minnesota?
Not under the current list. Minnesota is missing from the RN-to-BSN's approved locations, even though neighboring Wisconsin appears there on a case-by-case basis. The WHNP is the only Kent State online nursing program that names Minnesota. Minnesota RNs eyeing the BSN can ask Kent State whether the undated list has moved.
If Minnesota law exempts students, why does Kent State want a Minnesota license?
Because Kent State's catalog links the license you need to your state of residence and practicum, and that rule applies whatever the state exemption for higher-degree students allows. Hospitals add weight too: Mayo Clinic, for one, expects a currently registered Minnesota license. Apply to the Minnesota Board of Nursing early so the license is ready before your first WHNP course.
Does Minnesota make Kent State get Board approval before my WHNP clinicals?
No such step turned up. Minnesota's rules accept programs approved in their home states, with one condition attached to the supervising instructor's Minnesota license. Kent State's SARA membership, dating to 2015, covers the online program itself, and the college reports out-of-state placements.
Can I train in Minnesota on a multistate license?
No. Minnesota stays outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, and the compact's map shows no pending bill there, so a multistate license from any compact state stops at the border. Plan on a Minnesota RN license. Minnesota has not enacted the APRN Compact either, a detail that matters later, when you seek NP licensure after the WHNP.
