Iowa residents and Kent State's online nursing programs
Kent State's approved-states page leaves Iowa off every online nursing list, so Iowa residents cannot currently enroll in the RN-to-BSN, the MSN concentrations and certificates, or the post-master's DNP from home. Iowa's own approach to outside schools is a checklist rather than an approval: its Board approves none of them but spells out what they must do before students train in Iowa.

Kent State's current answer for Iowa
Kent State publishes where each online program enrolls and, separately, whether each licensure program meets a state's educational requirements. For Iowa, the first answer is no across the board.

The MEETS rows describe licensure for graduates, useful if you study from a listed state and later practice in Iowa. Treat them as provisional, since the APRN concentration pages describe the out-of-Ohio licensure question as unresolved. For the hybrid FNP, AGPCNP and AGACNP, which require some time on the Kent Campus, Kent State publishes no out-of-state rule at all. Programs and states are matched on our approved states guide.
Iowa's checklist for nursing programs from other states
Iowa's Board of Nursing, which sits within the state's inspections and licensing department, approves no program based in another state. Its page for those schools lists the duties they carry anyway:
- Clearance to operate comes from the Bureau of Iowa College Aid, not the Board.
- Iowa law applies on top of the home state's rules.
- The Board may request data at any time.
- Faculty and preceptors teaching in Iowa need an active license, Iowa-issued or multistate.
- Clinical contracts define each side's duties, leave faculty in control of learning, and provide for annual review and termination.
Nearly every item falls on the school rather than the student, which is why the enrollment question for Iowa rests with Kent State. The contract item mirrors Kent State's own rule that hours count only at agencies holding a College of Nursing affiliation agreement.
Preceptors and practice in Iowa
Under 481 IAC 616.16, the bulk of an ARNP student's precepted experience should come from an ARNP or physician who shares the student's role and population focus. That preceptor holds a license from their own state of practice, the preceptorship is set out in writing, and those agreements get an annual review. School and facility jointly approve each preceptor. Iowa's title is ARNP, where Ohio says APRN.
AANP counts Iowa among full practice states, so an NP-owned clinic can be as workable a site as a hospital unit. University of Iowa Health Care, UnityPoint and MercyOne are the large systems, and the main metros are Des Moines-West Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and the Iowa side of Davenport-Moline-Rock Island. They illustrate where Iowa NP students search rather than sites committed to Kent State.
Iowa also rewards preceptors at renewal time: a preceptorship of 60 hours or longer, run as an organized program, converts to 6 contact hours once the school documents it.
Licenses and the compact in Iowa
For RNs studying beyond licensure, Iowa clinicals require an active license, either Iowa's own or a multistate one, and practice follows Iowa Code. Iowa has honored multistate licenses since January 19, 2018, and Ohio joined the compact in 2023. Iowa Code 152.1's student exemption offers an RN nothing: it covers unlicensed students only and expressly excludes anyone licensed as an RN, LPN or ARNP in any U.S. jurisdiction. Does the Iowa Board of Nursing approve Kent State's programs?
Iowa's Board approves no nursing program based outside Iowa. Those programs meet a set of obligations instead, from state clearance through the Bureau of Iowa College Aid to properly licensed faculty and preceptors. Separately, Kent State's approved-states page lists no online nursing program for Iowa, so enrollment from Iowa is not currently open.
Can I use an Ohio multistate license for clinical hours in Iowa?
For RNs past initial licensure, Iowa takes either its own license or a multistate one, and both Iowa and Ohio belong to the compact. Kent State's own wording points to a license from your home-and-practicum state, so have its advising office confirm the one it will keep on file.
What do Iowa preceptors receive for precepting?
Iowa's renewal rules turn a preceptorship of 60 hours or more, inside an organized program, into 6 contact hours. The school has to document it, so raise the paperwork with your faculty early. Kent State adds recognition of its own, including PreceptED continuing education.
Would a Kent State NP degree qualify me for an Iowa ARNP license later?
Kent State's program listing puts Iowa in the MEETS column for its MSN NP concentrations, AGCNS and certificates. The concentration pages call the question open, so ask Kent State directly and review the Iowa Board's current ARNP requirements yourself before you apply.
